So going away to Peurto Rico with my family during spring break (from monday to sunday). We have practice every day during the break except for sundays, and Im the captain of my JV team. We're a new program and dont have Varsity yet, but we act, feel, like one because we're the best boys lax team at our school. And our coach demands it too; hes been there, don it all, playing at Duke and winning champ and playing semi pro lax and pro football. And also, hes big on moral lessons. I played well during our first scrimmage but he was upset that I didnt shoot when i was open. During preseason he took me aside after practice and told me that he expects big things and that i should be setting high goals for myself. And know im on 2nd string middie. I dont know if hes trying to make me hungrier and pulling a lesson on me (if he is its definitely working).
My question is to everyone out there...
Should I go to Peurto Rico with my family for 5 days, Or as the captain go to practice and get better?
Thank you all.

It's a tought situation. Let your coach now some how in away that by going to practice you are skipping a great trip to a great place. I would stay to show some dedication. Captain? Second line? WTF?

Thanks.
Yea...Captain and 2nd line. After a game where i was too unselfish passing up open shots (to ppl who were open on the doorstep of the goal but they missed my passes...)
I feel depressed and at the same time eager than ever to work harder than everyone, cause i know i can, i am, the best on the team.

Here is what I would (have) to do-
Stay at practice. no matter how good you are, there is always someone better. Also, your a captain. If you leave your team for a week, they will not trust you to be there when they need you. Being a captain is about building trust within a team, not abandonning them for a week and coming back.
PS-if you leave, expect to drop to 3rd or 4th line...

To be honest, being a captain and on the second line aint suttin that should be happenin. I can't seem to recall ever seeing thath appening. Show dedication, and play your hardest showing u deserve being back on the 1st line. Yes, puerto rico, damn its a nice vacation.. But if u really like ur coach, if you really like the sport, if you really wanna strive n be the best, stay and practice. It'll reward u in the end, even tho u miss out on a fantastic trip.

It's middies. If your coach has one stacked first mid line then your coach isn't very smart because when they come out then the game is going to go downhill. Offensively, and defensively. You should have 1st and 2nd lines about even and a 3rd line can be a little worse.
But back to the topic at hand. I had the same dilema last year except for Australia instead of Puerto Rico, ask your coach whats going to happen during practice that week and if you really need to be there. Also tell him in Puerto Rico your going to bring your lacrosse stick and throw around so it's not like your going to be totally out of it.

just go to practice, remember that you can go to puerto rico many more times through out your life time but you can't always go play high school lacrosse....its a bummer to miss out on a nice trip like that but you gotta do what you feel is right

i would go to puerto rico, you dont get many chances to do that in a lifetime. if your not missing any games then i say your team should be fine for 5 days without you. its not liek your whole life has to be focused on lacrosse only.

personally i would go to puerto rico. you would probobly regret not going to puerto rico for the rest of your life but i don't think you would regret missing a week of jv practice

Your coach is asking you to skip a family vaction, during a time when school is out, to go to practice. How do your parents feel about this?

I havent asked my parents yet. I hope its not hard to cancel something like that...err goddamit.
I'm really leaning toward staying, if my parents let me. I'm not going to play college ball, hopefully club, but nothing close to big.
Like some of you said, i agree it comes down to how much I love the sport, and i definitly know theres better people out there than me. I love lax, and as much as I want to go to Puerto Rico...ahhh
Please keep the responses coming

my advice is to stay and play lacrosse but kinda let your coach know what you're doing so your dedication doesn't go unnoticed.... and then just throw down at your house evrynight and make the most of your break hahah but thats just me

Step 1) talk to Parents about dilemma
Step 2) talk to coach
Step 3) weigh pros and cons of both
Step 4) Decide
Personally, a 5 day FAMILY vacation is more important than lax, IMHO. I know family vacations can suck sometimes, or you might be annoyed from some things about your family, but think abou it this way: Lax is temporary, Family is forever.

Family first and always. Talk it over with your parents though. Sounds like they've already made plans and reservations for you, which cost $ to cancel (if they can even cancel them). Too much lax can turn someone into a burnout, and also if your coach is big on moral lessons he should know the importance of family.

Thank you so much all. Yea i chose to go with the family, especially since my grandmother is coming from Japan and i see her once or twice a year.
Im really proud that i made the decision all by myself, haha, but thanks guys. Yea, TheKOB, you're really right, hes a moral man so he should be understanding. And RottingMind, you too, lax is temporary and family is definitely forever. Like you two, and the other older ppl who said to go, you all are mature ppl, and like my coach, have good morals so i love that and totally respect it. mmm yea im done, thanks all.
