i've seen it done in the MLL, but he could only use his body. i think extending his arms would've been called for a hold or something along those lines. in college, i've seen some kids drop their sticks, but they go to pick it up. even if it was in the middle of a fight for a groundball, they don't actually participate without the stick. so i'm gonna say it's illegal to hit without a stick.

playing without your stick is illegal. no ifs, ands, or buts.

Rule 6-6 b. Illegal actions with crosse—A player shall not:
(1) Throw his crosse under any circumstances.
(2) Take part in the play of the game in any manner without his crosse,
except for substitution.

the lax rule book can be found here: http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules.html

Stupid rule.

If you lose/break your stick in just about any other set of rules, you can still enter the play and be of value to your team.....throw body hits, set a pick, kick the ball away from trouble or towards a teammate.

i think he's refering to hockey rules, i think, because in hockey its legal to play w/o your stick. i dont believe he's refering to a different set of lacrosse rules

tell that to our refs. High School Varsity in NC, mind you:
A kid on the other team swings his dpole at one of our mids comin up the field, baseball style, and snaps the thing. Ball somehow goes down a bit later, and the kid with two halves of a krypto pro goes into a big cluster of people going for a ground ball, flailing all around with his two pieces. It took forever for a posession, and they finally got it and took it up the field. Then the dpole came off. He was in the game for a over a full minute with a broken dpole, everyone of our coaches yelling at the refs about illegal play. The refs just watched and never made a single comment. I hate refs.

in my school league, one guy dropped his stick and when the ref noticed he blew the whistle to stop play and the team with the posession kept it. It was very weird but since we still had posession we didn't argue!:laugh

you couldnt play a game without them.

refs are human, just like you. perhaps when every shot you take goes in (no saves, no wide shots) they will call a perfect game

Agree with spenny. Playing without a stick is illegal procedure.

Yard sale means that the kids equipment flew off, but I've only heard the term used when talking about snowboarding and skiing.

there is a bit of a difference between missing a shot or whatever and allowing an obviously illegal and potentially very dangerous play to continue for over a minute of game time, particularly when they are PAID to insure a fair and safe game

no refs no games. its simple. expecting refs not to make mistakes is folly. there are also refs out there that are better at their jobs than others, much like any line of work.

if you have a magic potion that will make refs infallible, its time you shared it

Next time I'm reffing and one of you guys gets juked I'm going to stop play and start yelling at you about your mistake. Yes we do make mistakes, we know that.

I'm not saying I expect refs to be perfect. bad calls exist in every sport. I'm mad because the some of the refs here in NC don't even know the rules. That was my thing. One whole minute in the game, they shoulda noticed. After the game, they didn't realize they had done anything wrong. We once had to hold a game from starting for 10 minutes while one older ref ran through all the rules and signals before the game. I'm just slightly frustrated at the lack of competent officials here.

Pro field (MLL), CLA field, and all types of box.

Oh, and hockey.

Regarding the snapped D-pole, that should have been called....you can't play with a broken stick.

you and a friend should go take the reffing class and start helping out the shortage. it will give you a chance to give back to the game.

if enough people did that you wouldnt have refs that didnt know the rules

That's exactly right. If you are a guy who likes to drive to the goal with the ball, you are going to get a lot of illegal hits in a game that aren't going to be called.

If you're good, you suck it up, even expect it, and score more.

Now would be funny...
I watch NFL games where they uphold bad calls after "reviewing the play." It's part of sports in general.

THe oldest hs lax team within 100 miles of me has had a program for 7 years. Most schools have started in the past 3. That's probably why there aren't alot of people willing to ref

we have a really funny local ref, i once heard him say to an opposing coach, after the coach breated him for a call "hey, i'm making less mistakes than your defense, why are you telling at me?"
