my question is about the coils that you have to make when doing pockets such as the mesh X and complete pocket. i was wondering if they serve any purpose at all or do they just look cool? do they help keep the ball in the middle of the pocket or what? thanks for any responses.

ok thanks. i was wondering if they actually did anything caz i was thinking about just looping a piece of nylon around the leather and bringing it in to the sidewall. like the corner pocket is. but the coils do look pretty tight.

No, they really do something, sorry liz, not trying to show you up or anything. The coils are there to hold a specific amount of room between the sidewall and the pocket. you will notice when you are stringing that the coils will go over the plastic a little bit, it will look odd, but as you break in your pocket, you will see the difference. The nice thing about the coils is that they will not shrink in the rain or wet conditions. I have a trad X, which is a mesh X with no mesh. it is sick and it is my favorite stick (right now)

when i can get a pic on this site u'll see my point... the outer 2 leathers u pull tighter to form a nice chanel and since the leathers are tight they don't move... so u might have missed my point if u look at the post after mine u can see he says that he was thinking of using something els which i said would work fine... in conclusion u are right they do DO someting but nothing special that something els couldn't do so the coils are a diferent style or cosmetic and u can string the side by useing a thecnique similar to a regular traditional pocket or something els to u'r liking... what i was not trying to say which u could have missunderstood is u could not just leave them out u would need someting insted to take theyr place
i hope that clears things up for ya!

thats great, if it is your stick, then whatever works for you. I think that you'll see in time, that the leathers won't hold as well as they have been up to this point. It prolly won't be a problem for you, because if you are anything like me, you'll restring it before there is an issue, but i have found that the coils really come into play over a period of time, but thats neither here nor there.
BTW- This is great, finally talking to someone that knows what they are talking about-- Good work

i like to think the coils do do something... i have them in on my custom pocket and it keeps the ball dead center in the sweet spot when i'm cradling... i'll get some pics up, but it's late and the camera doesn't work well with no light, i'll get it up tomorrow...

lizlax- That is a great idea! It's the Ribbed for your "pleasure" pocket! NICE!!!
Anyways... A lil profile on the pocket...
It took me about a 2.5 hours to make. It is my first experiment w/ coils. It shoots like a dream, really smooth release. The coils and the pita twist both stick above the leaters, the leathers are kinda just there for depth. Its a great pocket and i would recomend it to any advanced stringer.

it is quite easy you can do it with out a pocket or ne thing just to get a feel for it. take a nylon shooting string and bend it in half now with your fingers bend the nylon at the half way point(it doesnt have to be exact) and then just wrap the nylon around itself and keep it tight. repeat till satisfied...hope it helps

Making coils is a pain in the @$$ but very effective in my oppinion. Keeps the ball in the right place very well. Hey lax n brew how did you make it so that all your coils seem to run together? I can only figure out how to make my coils if they are attached sidewall to a leather in the middle but not how to make coils that go in ladders or like you have done.

it looks liek the puzzle pocket to me
In response to Dpole's original post, lizlax and Farley are both right. lizlax summed it up pretty well in his second post. Coils used between the sidewall and outer thongs do a good job of keeping them in place, as Farley said, but like lizlax pointed out, there are other ways to do the same thing.
On the other hand, unlike Mesh-X and Corner-type pockets, coils make a lot more difference on trad variations like lax n brew's pocket or Homegrown. Coils in contact with the ball create more friction which usually means more whip. That helps with retention and sweet spot hold as others have pointed out. Coils have their place, and Van O'Bannion is an innovator. It all depends on what you want.

when you are stringing mesh x, after your first coil where do you go to? through your starting sidewall hole? directly to the next sidewall hole?
