ok BOX goalies , im having alittle trouble with 5 hole recently and i have no idea why , i used to be fine with 5 hole but now for some reason somethings gone wrong ... ive gone from a wood stick , to a bignasty which i cant stand , and now im using an extreme because that all my association has at the moment ... so im thinking that it might be becasue of the changing of the sticks , not sure ...... so my question is where do most of you hold your goalie stick ... right on the throat of the head , a little bit higher ..or like 5 inches up ... does anybody have any suggestions on how i can improve my 5 hole again ?? PLEASE help im getting really frustrated

5 Hole is a great spot to shoot cuz its often the most available space to rifle one if the goalie has good position. I hold my stick higher up, but sometimes will hold it closer to the head if Im getting real low for outside shots. I dunno what to tell ya for protecting that area, just maybe collapse a little and keep your legs a bit closer together. Or just go back to the wood if its that much of a problem.

I do find it to be a huge adjustment whenever I use different sticks. Therefore, it would be different from wood to plastic.

With a wood stick, I place my stick hand on the throat, where the backbend would be.

With a plastic stick, I place my hand 8 inches away from the throat of the stick. From there, I tape a knob at that point. That knob in the middle of the shaft would be where I would put my stick hand.

I do the same thing with my Eclipse and rarely get beat 5-hole.

Going from a woodie to plastic definitely opens up a lot more room down there. Maybe you are lifting up just a little and giving an extra inch or two. If your playing against the same guys all the time they are probably picking up on whatever little openings you give.

I hold my stick about 4 or 5 inches up from the throat, but I might change that to 6 or 7 now that I have grown a little bit so I can stand up and cover the top of the net. Try to get your hands on your old goalie stick and measure how high your hand was from the tip of the head. Then take a measuring tape, measure up from the top of the head of your plastic stick and put a roll of tape around that spot to form a bigger grip like you probably had with your woody. If your getting picked off on your five hole, either get more active with your stick (ie: dont bring your legs in to stop the ball, much quicker to move your stick over, still try and step, but move your stick more) and consider going down on long underhand shots. 97% of the top someone winds up underhand, it will stay in the bottom 2 and 1/2 feet of the net. Also, if you throw 200 passes during a practice right now, start throwing 500 passes during practice and then go home, throw another 200 or 300 against a wall. The more passes you throw with your stick, the more you'll be used to it in a game and it will feel alot more normal in your stance.

Don't put any weight on your stick when your in your stance, it takes away from reaction time and throws you off balance once you make a save and move.

Actually, if your using plastic, you want it about 2 inches infront of your toes when your in your stance, takes up more room of the 5-hole, and you still wont trip on your stick when you go to move. If your using wood, it really doesn't matter.

because that can change your stance quite a bit and also throw off your balance.

i keep it sort of pinched in between of my shoulder and torso with my arm so my stick doesnt move and it doesnt throw me off when i use it to make a save

And can force you to trip over your stick, or slow down your foot movement down low.
