So the other day my coach wanted to talk to all the captains. So me and 2 of my friends go over there and he says some stuff about plays. Then he asks if he can have a word with me. So then he starts saying that since I am the middie & team captain (we have a captain for each position and one of those is the team captain.) that I need to get more involved with these guys. I had no clue what this meant so I asked him. He said that the kids on the team look up to me. But they are intimidated and scared to approach me because when we play other teams I know most of the guys on that team and I score a lot of our goals. He kept saying stuff like "Your their Mikey Powell, their Gary Gait, now act like it." So what should I say to my teammates to get them to speak up? Anyone had a similar problem?

MIddle of practice, when people are getting water. Call them all over. Ask them, as a group if anyone has anything to say to you. Any comments or questions or something like that. And INSIST if people don't pipe up right away. Our captain did that yersterday, and that was probably the BEST bonding experience my team has ever had. I wont get into the details about it.

I thought you guys (Arbor View) were 0-7? Also, congrats on somehow contributing to every goal your team has scored.

Ask you teammates what they think you and the coaches should do to try to improve the team overall. Our captains did that when we got off to somewhat of a bad start, and since then, practices have become more fun, effective, and we have improved as a whole because everyone contributed to the way the team should be run.

Or just break balls to get a bit loosened into conversation. By joking around with them, it will help put you on their level, making it easier for them to talk to you.
