i know what a yardsale is (when a guy gets checked and drops his stick) but why do we call it this? I was watchng the hofstra-delaware and a kid got yardsaled so i said "yard sale" to which my dad replied "what". when i tried to explain to him i relized i did not know where this phrase came from. could someone please answer it for me?

Because the stick is lying on the ground, looking about ready to be bought at a "yard-sale."

another variation:

"free stick on the open market"

Our team is nerdy. We yell "HOLY [NO CURSING] HE JUST GOT PWNED!!!!". yardsale is still a favorite at practice though.

we say he got "de-sticked" but sometimes yardsale.

we only use yard sale of you get the kids glove off, or hit him hard enough to pop his helmet

our team calls it a yardsale when they drop their stick, and an open house when they lose their gloves and such.

Most of my team is too dumb to even know what a yardsale is, so usually I am the only one who ever calls it. I don't call it on crappy sticks though. Who would want to buy a liquid?

I knocked some kids stick out in our last game(on a dive): http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h214/nevets720/stevepembroke.jpg
when this happens in practice the coach asks how much the kid is selling the stick for, I like to call it a helicopter when it twirls in the air

UNCdefense

I've heard helicopter...I'm guessing your #11 on the ground after your dive for the stick?I yard saled this nasghty attackmen the other day, I felt like a monster even though it was probably just luck....Another favorite that this kid on my team always says is after someone does something nasghty he'll be like "Oh my gosh, someone get him some milk to go w/ them cookies" or he'll ask if they want milk w/ their cookies....Doesn't make much sense but it's funny

Pitibear

sure it does, that's either his play (metophorically) or his equipment (literally) in "crumbs" on the ground...

back in the 80s we called it helicoptering, i didnt hear yardsale till i started coaching, but de-twigging is my favorite

Helicopter is only when it spins around, you can yardsale someone without putting their stick into rotation.

I first heard the term yard sale in skiing. A full on yard sale occurs when a guy biffs and loses both skiis, both poles, his hat and his goggles. I have not encountered the term in lacrosse, but it would seem to me you need to lose more than one piece of gear to qualify for a "yard sale".

yardsale is to cool to come from skiing

Nearly everyone in michigan refers to this as a "rape". We don't use it as freely as we used to do to the whole Duke incident, but there is always a round of "RAAAAAPPPPEEE" evey time some ones stick is knocked away from them.

abomb

When ever we (our team) decks someone, we tell them our nickname that has to do with our name, like mine is a-bomb because my name starts with an a, so while their on the ground i'll start chanting a-bomb, or say you got a-bombed, there's two guys on my team who have g in starting their last name, , so they'll lock arms and start yelling g-train together while they spin around.

it sounds kind of queer because it kind of is, but its funny

ram-x-man we use "rape" sometimes too, its only like two of us on the team but its sweet

BCdefense

One of my first matches years ago some one completely de-twigged me so I ran straight to the loose ball and booted it off the pitch. Thats when I discovered you werent allowed to do that... Was pretty embarrassed :nofear:

we use rape.....it's a drawn out "ohhhhhhhhh! b**ch got raped!!"
I see that term is used by a few...
in the olden days...that term was reserved for when someone was all over a guy either holding or puching or hacking...and was just relentless...thats when we pulled out the rape term
for a simple de-twigging that doesnt deserve the raping term...

yardsales...i agree with the lone poster above who said he thought it came from skiing...when guys fall and all their crap goes everywhere on the mountain...when looking at it it looks like a yardsale...
a yardsale is when more than just a stick flys out of ones hands...thats like if the stick goes one way, the helmet goes another or his glove(s)...basically when 2 or more pieces of equipment are lost

RedStormLaxer41

ive never heard yardsale before this thread.... my team yells "yahtzee!!!" (sp?).... i have no idea why, we just do. i love seein kids scramble to pick up their sticks 15 yards away

We pretty much just call it "Ooooh." I did it to a dpole recently and it made me happy.

I call it a yard sale but when its up in the air and someone hits it.... it is called a "price tag"

laxpimp
06-14-2006, 02:20 PM
Nah, yardsale is still te best. During a box game one of my buddies did a nice stick check and knocked the kids' stick out his hands. He (my teammate) screamed yardsale and hacked the kid's hand.

My team definetely calls it a yard sale and when it is in the air or lying on the ground i came up with the price tag. Dont listen to my bro (Yard Sale 212). Also if the player is going to pass the ball and it falls out of the back of his stick i like to scream "You forgot something."

UNCdefense omg thats just funny, lol im still laughing at that. I can only imagine a accent/funny face to go with it. Which my friend who doesnt play lax has some funny accents in class. Like he'll be like "Shut UP!" to the teacher. Pretty funny.
