View Full Version : Single Side Mechanics Change
Three times this year during college 3-man games we've had tight nets that resulted in balls going in and quickly coming out...so quickly that the lead has either not seen it or seen it and thought it was a pipe, etc.
Standard procedure has been to have the single side always watch the shooter for late hits and not follow the ball after a shot.
Might be better, once the trail has come onto the field, to have the single
also follow the shot and have the trail have sole responsibility for that late hit.

And we all know we're perfect on that score! Good suggestion though.
I like some of the new goal setups where there is a rod welded to the back of the pipe that the net is strung to. It helps to alleviate some of those tight corner goal calls/no calls.

Better yet, what about those prototype goals where a tight grid of lasers vaporizes anything that completely breaks the plane of the goal? If any chunk of the ball is left, no goal. Of course, if the goalie gets checked into the goal. . . .
What about a camera suspended over the goal, like in the NHL?
Seriously, though, I'd be willing to bet we'd miss a lot more stuff over the course of a season if we started having the single watch for goals, too. We might miss a rare goal—which is certainly bad—but we'd miss crease violations, late hits, cheap shots, etc. galore over the course of the season, incuding allowing some goals that should be waved off due to crease violations.
As single, I do try to watch the goal if I think my partner is screened out, but I don't think we need to change the mechanic.

Well, I'm going to sit firmly on the fence and agree with everyone so far. I do believe LaxRef is correct that overall in the course of the season, there are more cases of things happening after the shot than missed goals.

Yes, but I would bet you tend to sneak a peek after a shot as well! :naughty:
