I was watching a tape of the Princeton-Towson 2001 Final Four, and Towson got a penalty for having 5 long-poles on the field. Why is this a penalty?

it would offer the defense a distinct advantage to have everyone use a long pole...

Back in the day there used to be no limit to the amount of longpoles on the field, but it was rediculous. So now they limit to 4.

How long have you been playing, did you not know this was a rule?

Certain post-collegiate club rules however do allow for 5+ poles on the field however.

Royce, however, there are no grammar rules that permit 2 'however's in one sentence, however.

They'd like to have some offense in the game, and teams used to sub in 6 long poles (or 5 on man down) and it made it very hard to score. By making it 4, they allow some flexibility and keep the strategy of the LSM position without allowing the game to grind to a halt.

Oh, I guess the real answer to your question is "Because that's what the coaches on the rules committee voted for."

Because NFHS rule 6-5: Illegal Procedure explicitly states a maximum of four long poles are permitted. That's why.

seems like now that the offense has all the advantages, we should turn back the clocks and let all 6 lp's back on the field...

That would be fun...it would definitely create a deficiency in LSM's to be recruited...

Don't beat yourself up about it, Royce. I'm in a snarky mood today. Your grammar is usually impeccable, so I thought you'd tolerate a little funnin'.

Good thing I was right, too.......however. :naughty:

Thanks for the compliment.

I'd say limit long poles to three - more shots, more scoring.

But then you remove the LSM position from the game. Personally, I think it gives some flexibility and strategy to the game.

If you were going to eliminate a position, I'd want to see them get rid of FOGO.

Meh, it was my best attempt at german. I was thinking "I before E." I guess I'll just stick to Spanish and English.
