So my freshman boys team is having some problems with consistency. Some of the players have the ability to catch & throw with no problem at all when they're just running along. But as soon as some pressure is put on them, their abilities are gone. Can't catch...can't throw. It doesn't even have to be a long stick on them...it can be a short stick defender or even just a "high pressure" situation where they have a chance at a sure goal.
I've told them repeatedly that it's mostly mental. They're thinking too much about what they're going to do after they catch the ball instead of concentrating on catching. I tell them repeatedly that the number 1 thing is to catch the ball, to not think about anything else. That's apparently not working. One of the problems that I'm having is that I can't take the time during practice to work with just a select group that's having problems with the basics. I try to motivate them to do extra practice on their own, but it seems like they're just not getting any better. I feel like I'm really at my wits end here.
What to do, what to do....
