View Full Version : Reverse Quiz: Clearing the Ball

Player A2 gets a pass from GK A1, and starts his run toward midfield despite a heavy ride. Now it's 24 seconds later, and A2, who still has the ball, still has not crossed midfield, yet he is not called for failing to advance.

At no point during the 24 seconds:
1. has team B gained possession of the ball
2. has team B touched the ball
3. has the ball gone OOB
4. has a flag been thrown

What's up here? If you know and it's obvious to you, hold off. This is a new rule to me, so I'm seeing how many know it.

There are multiple correct answers, I believe.

team A called time out and got a new 20 count.

Those are both good answers (probably the best ones) but I can still think of more.

Agree. Feel free to add your own now LR, since the quiz has been answered. It comes down to the fact any whistle to restart play (after a TO, loose ball technical, OOB, etc.) resets the 20 seconds, which is new to me but apparently well known to others. I don' t know how I went so long without knowing THIS one. :dummy: :thumbsdow

And also a play-on will restart the count as well.

You could also have situations like A1 wards, then team B delays the game during the dead ball.

Or--for one not involving a whistle--under NCAA rules if you step on the midline you end the count but you are not technically "across" midfield (NFHS rules aren't clear on exactly what ends the count).

Finally, you could have some idiot without a timer hand-counting the "20 seconds" and only be up to about 16 at the point when 24 seconds have elapsed. :dummy:

I take offense to that because up until about 3 weeks ago I was one of those "idiots" without a timer. My shoulder is starting to heal nicely thank you very much.

No offense intended. This was a not-so-subtle jab at CoachRob for arguing that we should hand-count the 20-second counts. Also, if your 20-second hand counts were near 20-seconds, you wouldn't even qualify for idiot status. However, if they were closer to 40 seconds. . . . :chuckle:

I do think that a better job should have been done in making sure all HS officials had timers for this year. I've had to lend my spare out on every HS game I've done so far. I think I should start charging rent. Yeah, that's the ticket! Exhorbitant rent!  :hot:

In our area we just stick an extra stick in the ground at midfield and use it as a sundial timer. Works great on sunny days, but those night games are a bear.

Do you keep track of goals using an abycuss too? :chuckle:

Not so subtle, indeed. :nono:

I was just saying that we do it for 4 and 10, why not the 20 as well? It's much cheaper than those overpriced timers, which beep at all times and confuse timekeepers.

But I accept your apology, though none was offered.
