View Full Version : Illegal Stick in game today...

So today in a game I played a player was running down the field getting checked over and over, and at one point the stick had been checked completely upside-down, but the ball never came out. So after running through our entire Defense, the kid ripped a shot and scored. I immediately requested a stick check form the referee, he granted and went to get the kid's stick. While the ref was walking to get the stick, the kid switched stick with one of his friends, and handed it to the ref. I caught the sly act and told my coach to get the original stick checked, and he did. The stick was tested, and was found to be illegal. My question is, should the kid have had an addition penalty for say, unsportsman-like conduct for attempting to cheat the gmae by switching his stick with an imposter?

Definitly an USC. I don't understand how the ref didn't see the switch if the kid did this while the ref was going to get the stick.

the kid walked over to the sidelines, and handed his friend his stick, then his friend handed him the other stick...the kid walked to the ref and handed him the "decoy" and I told my coach to check the original, and it was checked...it failed like the pocket check, and the check when you hold it on an angel upside-down. Im happy I caught it too because it sent the game into OT, we wound up losing though, 3-2 in OT

There's no penalty for exchanging sticks before the official asks you for it. Heck, there's no penalty for adjsuting the stick before the official asks you for it. If he tried to swap sticks after I asked him for it, I might go to the USC.

One time my partner went ot grab a stick and the kid said, "Wait, this isn't my stick" and tried to switch with a teammate. My partner insisted on taking the stick he was holding, but he later mused that maybe he should have checked both of them. But then what do you do if they're both illegal?

we should ponder. i have no reffing experience or training but i would just remove both sticks and give a 3 min NR?

why ponder? checking two sticks that are illegal = two different stick penalties.

Well, I think there's room for debate here. Consider this: you go to get A1 for a stck check at the end of the 1st. He happens to be holding 2 sticks when you get to him, so you decide to check them both, and one has a deep pocket and one has a pinched head . Now, standard practice is to penalize only the most severe infraction (e.g., deep pocket + pinched head, you only enforce the 3:00 NR and not the 1:00 NR) when you have one stick with multiple violations. In addition, we know this player could only have been playing with one illegal stick at a time. Thus, it isn't a huge stretch to give him only one penalty.

Now, I'm not saying the little bugger should get off with only one penalty, but I think it is open to interpretation.

Normal practice is for officials to check sticks from both teams at the end of 1st and 3rd quarters, then wait for coaches to request equipment checks.

The rule requires "at least one" inspection per half per team. Thus, the rules allow officials to check sticks whenever they want and to check as many sticks as they want. Officials do not need to wait for a coach to request a check.

IMHO, if an official believes that an illegal stick is being used, he should check that stick at the next dead ball. (Even with a practiced eye, this may be a once per season event.)
