View Full Version : Middle School confusion.....
I encountered one of the most amusing series of plays/penalties I have ever seen in a Middle School lax game....actually it was THE MOST amusing I've seen.
Here it is....
1) A1 slashes B1 defender during a ride....flag down. A2 slashes B1 player...2nd flag down...whistle.....A1 and A2 go off to the penalty box.
2) B1 gets ball lateral to goal outside box.
3) Whistle blows to resume play, immediate flag thrown into the air, and "flag down" called out. B1 drops ball...whistle....call....offsides...A3 player into the box.
(there were only 2 A-team players on the attack side)
4) Whistle blows to resume play, immediate flag thrown into the air, and "flag down" called out. B1 drops ball...whistle....call....offsides...A4 player into the box.
(there still were only 2 A-team players on the attack side)
Now there are A1,2,3,4 players on the box and only 6 on the field....relieving them of the stipulation of having 3 on their attack side.....the A-team coach asks with a pleading tone "are we ok now?"

I think it should have been a free clear for B. Personal foul in the defensive end on the defensive player - ball restarts at X.
Sounds like an interesting day.

Good thing the coach didn't realize what was going on, otherwise it could have been a 6 on 4 instead of a 6 on two. [/sarcasm].
I'm assuming Team B scored?

Several problems here. First of all, any time-serving penalty comes with a free clear, so the restart should not have been in the defensive end after the first two slashes.
Second, the play should not have started until team A was onsides. Of course, your timer should be going and team A should get a delay of game if they don't fix it before the timer goes off, but you shouldn't start play and then have an immediate flag down. This becomes especially important in a running-time game.
Third, once team A has shown confusion about needing to be onsides while man-down, and gotten a penalty for it, be very clear that they need to have 3 men in the attack half of the field before you can restart. This is good preventative officiating, and should be done especially at the middle school level.
Finally, when team A has four players out on penalties, they are [b]not[/i] freed of the burden of keeping three men in the attack half of the field. They are relieved of having to have 4 men in the defensive end.

LR beat me to it. They need to maintain three in the attack end until they have only two players left, at which time they have two attackmen and nobody else on the field.
Next, the first restart should have been a free clear.
Finally, don't restart the game until everybody is onside. They often take a little time, so give it to them rather than sticking them in the box.
Overall, it sounds like lots of fun with deep knee bends picking up all those flags.

It isn't clear whether B1 got the ball in the offensive or defensive half of the field after the penalty. If defensive, I agree this is wrong, but it could be B1 brought the ball into the offensive half, and then after advancing the ball there he droped it...in which case this part of the call is correct. Agree that you don't want to start up the game with players offside.
