The Clarington Green Gaels open the 2006 Ontario Lacrosse Association season tonight with a tilt against the Huntsville Hawks. There is a little history involved between these two teams.
This marks the 60th Anniversary year of Green Gael lacrosse, started in 1946 by the late Jim "Mr. Lacrosse" Bishop. Before setting the astounding record of 7 straight Minto Cup national junior lacrosse championships as the Oshawa Green Gaels in the 60's, they were once known as the Huntsville Green Gaels. When Mr. Bishop moved to Oshawa in 1962, he brought the franchise, and a few key players, with him. The rest is in the record books.
Since 1997 the Green Gaels have settled into the comfortable and family friendly confines of the Garnet B. Rickard Recreational Complex where they have brought home no less than 4 national championship Founder's Trophy's in the past 8 years. Many National Lacrosse League players have come through the Green Gaels organization - truly a premiere franchise in the world's #1 hotbed of box lacrosse.
The Clarington Green Gaels would like to invite all lacrosse fans, old or new, to help open the 2006 season. Admission for adults is $6, Seniors & Students with ID $3 and children 12 and under free. The best bang for your entertainment buck in the Durham Region. If you know what box lacrosse is, you'll agree.
Opening face off is at 8 PM at the Garnet B. Rickard arena in Bowmanville, corner of HWY #2 & #57 (between Courtice & Bowmanville).
