Does anyone here regularly use the "Motor Cycle Grip" (both palms facing down) on face-offs? The standard grip is right palm up, left palm down, but I understand that a lot of good face-off men use the palms down method.
I'm a face-off man and I have used the normal style all my life, but as I've practiced it lately, the motor cycle grip seems to offer a bit more power on the clamp.
What are yours thoughts on using this style, and what do you think are the pros and cons of using it?

I use the motor cycle grip because it is just easier in my opinion. Also, with normal grip, you have to place your right wrist on the ground to clamp, which makes it easy to read what you will do, and you need to rotate your wrist to clamp down. With motorcycle grip, your face off position is the same every time and you use your feet more to clamp which gives you more power and speed.

i've always done it this way. not because i think there is a great advantage but just because i've gotten used to it this way

My coach made me learn only motor cycle grip so I am pretty good at it.

I'm left handed so I always did it with my both plams down. It just felt better.

I always do regular grip, its all about clamp speed. If you cant beat your guy to the clamp, thers no point in trying to do it any more with him. Start doing jumps or getting underneath it isnatead.

If you can beat your guy to the clamp, then your fine. Put it behind you/off to the side and go scoop. If you use motorcycle grip, you have to switch your hand postioning in the process, whcih just slows you down.

It all boils down to prefrence though. Whatever you like

i dont like the motorcycle grip because: 1. a kid broke his wrist this way(maby he would of broken it the other way too who knows?)2. if you see your man go down like that theres only one move he can do(clamp)3. you have to switch your hands to scoop.

but i guess its preference

Not true at all. With motorcycle grip I can use any move you can do with regular grip.(Jump, Clamp, Punch, etc.) Plus, it's alot easier to do the kamakazie

Its all preference. But I've found your more of a threat to fast break in the standard method. I do use motorcycle sometimes when we're playing a lesser opponent and i want to have fun by jumping, grabbing the ball, and then throwing it out in front while keeping both hands on my stick.

I always thought you were supposed to do it this way

I started normal, I went to a clinic and they taught me the Motorcyle-grip (MG), then I switched back.

I have a fast clamp, so usually at about halftime people start jumping me and such, so then I switch it to the MG just to confuse them.

Preference really, but I would say you can get more power with a MG, and more speed with normal.

I have tried the motorcycle grip and go against it sometimes and do not think it is as good as the more traditional grip.
There is no doubt that it is great for power clamping
but if you are trying to rake for a fast break right away its much more akward
and I guess its okay for jumping, but most of the time when I jump I just try to pop the ball back through my legs and get a quick ground ball, which is difficult because you would have to one hand it
the only other advantage i could see is that it is possibly better for putting the ball back to your wingman through your own legs

Our best face-off man uses the grip, as does Alex Smith. I also read in an interview with Alex Smith that he thinks the motorcycle grip is far superior and that most good face-off guys use it.

What makes it far superior though? Whats the advantage?

IMO its all just preference.

i guess its preference.. but i tell you one thing. if i ever go against someone who useds the motorcycle grip.. i use the "lock off your men" signal to my wingmen

theres only one move you can do with that grip, and thats the clamp. if you just jam your fist into his stick and turn your stick into a reverse clamp he cant do nohtin

Paul Cantabene uses the MG as well, and he OWNS face-offs.

But I don't like it because I can't do the jump with it.

I've always done it the norm. style but have tried the "motorcycle grip" before (that's right Greg I'm not just a long pole I'll try & beast some face too) & I like the normal style more. It's just what I've always done & when high schoolers use the motorcycle method 9 out of 10 times they're just going to clamp it & it seems to obvious...I stick to the normal way but I play defense so I guess either way it'll never really matter will it? :dummy:

I tend to use it when facing off. I don't know if it is more confortable for me, but I think riding dirtbikes in my spare time has something to do with it.
