View Full Version : 1 hand scoop?

This is my 1st year in lacrosse and I still don't know everything about it.
Now I usually scoop with both my hands on the stick and "butt down". But sometimes when I cant get around a player or they are ahead of me I just use one hand to scoop. I thought it was working fine until somebody told me I shouldnt do that.
So I wasn't sure if this was a bad habit to get into? or if it was illegal? Thanks

no it is not illegal but it is safer with 2 hands....

its not illegal just a bad habit. Coaches will most likely get really angry, if they see you do it.

It's not illegal but can become a very bad habit. Poles can get away with it most of the time b/c of the extra length. It is better to stop that habit though.

Ya I wouldn't suggest it...I personally do it all the time w/ a long pole but normally I'm in a full out sprint & I don't have to worry about getting hammered...If you're taking a one handed gb & someone's near you (especially if it's a long pole) that just screams yard sale. I have nothing against doing it if you're all on your own but if you drop a one handed gb be prepared to get ridiculed & yelled at by your teammates

it sounds like what you're doing is fine. as long as you are useing both hands when you can you're doing fine.

I find it's one of those things, that if it works pefectly for you, then okay...if you screw it up just once in a game, then it's a "bad habit."

we use one hand scooping as an intermediate step in learning to scoop in blind lax...the player using one hand can feel the ball under the top section of the head, or even the pocket...practicing one-handed feeling and scooping of the ball aids the touch-and-control when using two hands...

Like pitibear said, if you're naturally perfect at it, then ok. however, nobody on my team would hear the end of it from coach if we tried to scoop 1 hand in game and fail. I only scoop with one hand when i'm practicing against a wall or doing some sort of drill where i'm not in a hurry. in a game, it's better to be safe and just use both hands. I sometimes do it when i'm ALL alone in a game, but how often does that happen? and also you could be setting yourself to be laid out. hotshots who drop the ball or get a grounder and then play around with one hand on their stick are fun for me. i can rail em without penalty and then scoop the ball WITH 2 HANDS =p

doing a 1 handed scoop can be helpful, you just gotta know when to use it, using a one handed sccop, you are able to sccop the ball better, but take the risk of exposing more stick for a check so this is the reason I only use a 1 handed scoop when there is no pressure, otherwise i use 2 hands

i wouldn't say that, one of the reasons many choaches hate one handed scoops, is that when you scoop two handed then your forced to get low to the ground and scoop through the ball, when you use one hand a lot of times you won't get low enough and the stick will get stuck in the ground. And as you said you also expose more of your stick.

Another thing is if you get down with two hands and get drilled the refs are more likely to give the other guy a penalty, just something about one guy hitting another guy while hes bent over

i say it's a bad habit. if a guy is infront of you or on the side of you, he'd probably knock the stick out of your hands, but if hes far behind you you could probably doit. just make sure you know who is around you when you do it because us D men like to chop away when we see only one hand on the stick

if you're constantly scooping one-handed, you'll find a time where the entire sideline will be shouting 'YARD SALE!'

sometimes scooping one-handed would seem more reasonable in certain situations, but overall most scoops should be two-handed.

yeah when you have a guy on you or anything scoop two handed. but like when someone loses the ball and youre beating them go ahead and scoop 1 handed. i actually do it more than i should but it does actually work

YOu have more control with two hands. Two hands make you go down lower. One hand for me makes the stick just rake the ball forward.

Don't do it at all because its an easy "Yard Sale"

bad bad bad, occasionally I do it in a game by accident and hate myself for it. I Don't even suggest it when no one is near you.
