NFHS or NCAA:
Loose ball situation. There are just two field players (neither is a GK) going for it, A1 and B1, and both are within five yards of the loose shiny white ball.

1. They do not make any body contact whatsoever.
2. Neither stick hits either player, nor does either player kick the other's stick.
3. There is no offside violation.
4. Both players are legally equipped in every way, including mouthguards.
5. They both are playing for the loose ball and make only minor stick to stick contact.
6. There is no crease violation.
7. Neither player says anything out of the ordinary (no conduct issues).
8. There is no time out called (since it's a loose ball).
9. The ball does not go out of bounds at any time during the loose ball battle.
10. Both players keep both hands on their crosses at all times (no pushing, etc.).

EVERYTHING SEEMS ENTIRELY LEGAL TO THE NAKED EYE.

The official blows his whistle and awards the ball to team B at the spot of the ball.

What's up here?? What infraction did the official call against A1 who seemd to be playing by the rules and simply fighting for a loose ball? :nofear:

Bonus for getting this one correct. You really have to think about it.

A1 is OOB and playing the ball but I am not sure that is the answer you are seeking.

It took me 15 minutes to type the darned thing and Dan got it in two minutes?

You cannot play the ball when any part of your body is OOB. In this case, A1 had his foot on the sideline and was called for a loose ball IP penalty, which awards the ball to the opponent.

Good job Danny boy!!!

Actually, it's IP to participate in the play from OOB, not just to play the ball.

BTW, another legit answer is that a 10- or 20-count expired.

Follow-up question:
with his foot on the sideline, is a horn now allowed?

Nope, it's a technical foul to play from out of bounds, so no horn.

The attackman A1 stepped over the line of the box on the opening face off is another possibility

Good one. If no possession and A1 released early, IP, turn over the ball. Great thought.
