When a player levels an opponent well after they have passed or shot - do you call UR or an IBC? I've always called it IBC, but several other officials at the tourney used the UR call. Not that it matters, but just curious.
Had the call today - a sliding D-man levels a guy after he'd passed, and he had his back to the defender. Flag down - "you gotta be kidding me". I said "the hit was late, and you body-checked him from the rear - you can take your pick".

I use UR, if its well after they passed or shot then the contact is clearly unecessary. Maybe it meets the rule of IBC (don't know the definition off the top of my head) but I think it also is better as a selling point to go with UR.

Only another ref will comprehend this answer:
If it's more late that mean, call IBC as the ball was more than 5 yards away when he connected. No one can debate that.
If it's more brutal than late (you could tell the kid was going to lay that lick on whether the other kid still had the ball or not), call UR.
If it's both, or neither but it just smelled wrong to you, call USC.

I usually call it "Illegal body check—late hit." But as you say, you can call either.
The other day, I had a cross-check to the back of the goalie after the pass; the ball was already at midfield when the hit came. IBC or UR? I called it a 3:00 NR and wondered if I should have made it an ejection foul instead.

The rules give us (officials) a lot of room to use judgment. 3PP has a good breakdown of the correct thought process.
I like LaxRef going to 3:00 NR USC after the goalie was tatooed. Ejection is a possibility for a flagrant foul with clear intent to injure.

With the team losing by 8 late in the 4th quarter in an otherwise clean game, I called it yesterday as a push with possession and gave him 30 seconds. Not technically right by the book, but both coaches were satisfied at that point. It let the player know we were watching and the play wouldn't be tolerated, but it didn't make the overall situation any worse in an already lost cause game. Had it been dangerous or a safety issue, then I certainly would have made it more severe.
