I live in Thunder Bay, Ontario and the Lacrosse scene here SUCKS. Like our league doesn't even have the proper standards, our teams are small and we have dads as coaches with 6 men on the field instead of the normal 11. If Canada has BOXLA where are most of the players coming from?

Umm your problem is? We have extremely short benches and parent coaches. And we do decent. That is lacrosse. Thats why we are the best because we paly short benched and get so good from playing all the time. This is the first time in 4 years we have had 2 lines.

I like the lots of playtime but I didn't know anything about attackmen defensemen, things to practice and stuff until I found this site. It would be nice if there were practices or strategies because just playing can only go so far

Neither did I. But trust me, you know alot. Being able to understand the rules and work the ball around enables you to learn a play quickly. So when you get to a high level you know.

Southern Ontario, within three hours drive of Toronto.

Probably 60% or more of NLL pros come from this Region. Probably 50% or more come from within about 1 hour of Toronto - Think about what is within that approximate area - Whitby, Brampton, Six Nations, Barrie, Peterborough, Orangeville, St. Catharines, and several other centres.

No surprise, this territory is historic Iroquois stomping grounds.

I just wish it was bigger here so I wasn't always practicing on my own. It would be nice to have a group of people to practice with and have little scrimidges with

having a short bench is awesome because theres less of a chance of getting benched because you need everyone and down here its parent coaches also. that is also a big problem though because a lot of them have never played lacrosse and get the hand book and think they are god. they run plays into kids heads and force them to play special defence which can get to be a real problem because plays can be shutdown and defence and be broken with a few pick and rolls. also the best way to get good is to always have a stick in your hands that way you jsut get aware of how to use it and it becomes are part of you. but the biggest problem developing in the youth of lacrosse are habits. spinning sticks ball hogging always going to a certain spot. if you break these habits early it will make you a better player in the long run. another problem is one that the nll is having forcing players to only play offence and defence eg: tracey kelusky of the roughnecks is an amazing goal scorer... but he cant stop anything or ryan mcnish of the roughnecks couldnt shoot or run if his life depended on it. my point is that if kids were always taught transition play the problems developin in the nll will never continue. when your brain shuts down your body shuts down. sorry if this doesnt really have to do with the thread

It's reasonably popular in eastern Ont as well (aka Zone 5). Four Jr B and and a Jr A, a senior team, plus a number of minor associations.

Well, lacrosse is definitly biggest in British Columbia and Ontario. I've never played out west so personally I cant say where it is biggest out there. In Ontario it goes IMO;
1. Orangeville
2. Whitby
3. Peterborough

The Durham Region, east of Toronto has about 3000 players in 4 minor associations and a whole pile of adult players at all levels. AND... I am betting most of the coaches are moms & dads.

If you need to learn more about boxla there is no better two books out there than Jim Hinkson's "Lacrosse Fundamentals" & "Team Strategies." The latter is more for coaches and older players. But the former will give you all the info you'll need.

If you have a team, you have a start! Spread the news to your friends, make sticks available to them, sow the seeds of lacrosse this year and you might have a little more crop next year. Lacrosse is a very grassroots sport and it takes each individual some effort to make it grow. Take a few buddies and play in the park; suggest field lacrosse to your high school coaches; walk down the street bouncing the ball (avertise & practice at the same time); talk up the game to anyone that will listen.

Thunder Bay is ripe for box with the right kind of promotion especially since hockey is huge up there. The Clarington Green Gaels went to Temiskaming & Kapuskasing a few years ago to promote the game up there. Maybe your association could invite Sudbury minor up for some exhibition games.

1. orangeville
2. whitby
3. halton hills
4. mimico

i only put mimico becacuse their lacrosse roots are very deep. go to their arena and look at the display cases. some trphy's date back to the late 1800s. they arent very good anymore though.

1. Coquitlam - I'd say probably one of the best youth systems out there. All of there teams are the best in B.C.
2. Victoria - C'mon.......This is where lacrosse is at. Its what people talk about over here in B.C. and we've made the biggest players ( I.E. Gary Gait, Paul Gait, Lewis Ratcliff) I know there is more i just cant think right now

Try Tom Marechek.

Our association has only parents coaching or lacrosseaholics like me.
i coach a midget C team playing in B cause theres not enough C teams and i have only 10 players at the moment.
We are a 2 line team both lines play Offence Deffence.
Its up down off the floor only change on O not D.
Bantam has 18 Players PeeWee has 16 Novice has 14 Mini-Tyke/ Tyke has 6.
This is our First year playing teams from BC's Vancouver and surounding Municipalities.
Its a Minimum 2HR trip each way for games so all ours are on weekends.

orangeville is probably the bigeest as far as talent wise and whitby has the most kids buit the skill in whitby isnt what it was 5 years ago. you are right about clarington and newmarket being 2 of the biggest new centers, i also think that oakville deserves to be up there as well as midland and N.O.T.L .

thats amazing, would u like us to hold a parade? missassauga isnt that big and they maybe 2 top teams, if that( i heard their midget team blows this year and according to another member they were the best tommahawk team), midland is steadily growing in population so is N.O.T.L, plus notl has some very very good teams. remember this thread is for where lacrosse is big not WHO you THINK is best.

I don't think our scene sucks at all, we've got close to 500 kids playing this season in Thunder Bay and for the first time, a couple of rep teams. Sure we need more practice time, but we're getting better

centre wellington located just 10 mins north of guelph ontario is where it is at we have lots of teams , elora mohawks 2005 jrb cnd champs , and lots of roots, also lots of pros have come from this area john lovell the assistant coach of the toronto rock is my buisness teacher and the head coach owns a sports store jsut 20 mins away from my house so most definatly it is centre wellington ( fergus and elora and orageville) s where the hot bed for lacrosse is in southern ontario if not all of ontario is

Clarington is getting to be very big on lacrosse. Clarignotn has been going on for 4 or 5 years now. We already have a few teams in the A level. For instance our Bantam Field team last year went for C all the way up to A. Whitby, as a lot of you no is a pretty big organization that has been going around for a very long time. Since Whitby is farely close to Clarignton a lot of kids that play in Whitby are starting to merge over to Claringotn. I predict in just a few more years Claringotn will be one of the biggest organizations if things keep up this way.

Didn;t you just mention that all your teams were "A"? What were you doing in C?

And besides, being an A team only counts if your any good. Last year, as a C team we efin rocked a team that was later rated B. Yet we killed by a few mediocre B teams.

Im from Toronto and i dont know what some of you guys talking about Mississauga is a big city and pretty big for lax to. The younger lax teams like peewee and tyke do better then the older ones like bantam and midget. But things will change Mississauga will be a powerhouse in all levels soon enough.

Coquitlam, B.C. is the biggest minor lacrosse association in the province, followed by I think New Westminster, Victoria, and Burnaby. Coquitlam wins a provincial medal either bronze, silver, or gold, at every age level, (well PeeWee and up - there's no provs for mini-tyke, tyke, or novice), even in the girls leagues. Coquitlam girls won the provincial gold medal in PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget. Unfortunately there weren't enough teams to participate in a "Junior" Provincial championship for the ladies, but they had this tournament with only 3 or 4 teams, instead.
So I'd definitely say the powerhouse mega-assocations that are usually at the top of the podium are:

1. Coquitlam Adanacs
2. New Westminster Salmonbellies
3. Vancouver Island teams like Victoria Shamrocks, Juan De Fuca (JDF), etc.
4. Port Coquitlam Saints
5. Delta Islanders

Zone 9 in Ontario is big in lacrosse 3 junior A teams (St Catharines, Six Nations and Burlington) 5 junior B teams ( Spartans, Niagara on the lake, Welland, Six Nations and Hamilton) and 9 minor lacrosse associations with all age groups from peanut to Intermediate age groups (4-21) hard not to argue that lacrosse is hot in the Golden Horeshoe
