you want to work on:
1. explosive speed - getting up to your maximum from standing still as quickly as possible.
2. changes of speed - to lure opponents and then blow by them
3. speed over 40 yards - to make penetrating runs
4. endurance - to be the guy who can gut it in the final period.
Get George Sheehans book on long distance running...George gets into the difference between sprinters and marathoners, and is very specific in training methods between the two, utilizing heartbeat rate to maximize your potential...

There are weights you can attach to yourself while running. Wear a backpack fulls of weights. Run stairs like Rocky does. Make sure you run everyday and add more distance or time running. Run with your lax stick while crading to work on cradling too.
