So in todays game, I happened to have had a penelty shot against me. I came out to challenge the guy and started to slowly move back. He went to my right and put it past me right underneath my right arm.
What would have been the right thing to do? come out as I did or wait back and hopefully they will miss or hit you? We may have some more and I want to be ready this time. We had a total of 3 penalty shots in our game.

Play it like you would a breakaway, If he comes in on the right or left side play the angles maybe. Im not experienced in goalie though, maybe LGK can enlighten us.

in box right
you should just approach a penalty shot as a break away. if your quick you can cheat to one side, his weak side, and force him to go where you want him to. i personal just watch his movements as hes commin down i get aligned with the stick but i try to read his eyes usualy a shooter will at least glance at an area before he shoots then i just wait for him to shoot and since i could read him like a book i can stop him. i like it best when the go for the top of the net because i crouch low my shoulder leave eneough space for the shooter to think he has a shot, and i am confident i can pop my shoulders up in time if he goes high and if he just fakes like mad i like to throw an arm out to make him think he got me to bite, then when he shoots i react and since im in decent position i can stop it.
really on break aways its 50/50 either he will score our he wont.

Yes it was in box. This was in the begining of the game so I did not really get a chance to see everyones playing style.
Should I have stayed in the net or did I do the right thing and come out to cut down the angle?

when u say u came out did u come out like a step from the line or did u come out and run him?
if u ran him, u didnt do the right thing.
if u stepped out a step maybe a half depending on how fast u backed up, you did the right thing.
i dont like to back up very fast so i take one large step off theline and just wait there like a spider stalking its prey.

I took about a step or two out of the goal line and stared to move back slowly as he came in.

then you did the right thing, once agin there isnt much you can do on break aways, well there is but u get it, it just sounds like he beat you with a good fake and a hard shot.

Stepping out - I think what LGK was trying to point out is if you come out too far, then you give them a chance to shoot over you. Thats the problem with angle goalies is that they need to know when to drop back.
Depending on the level of shooter, you can sometimes bait to one post and force them to take the other post and you have one place to go, BUT, a good shooter will fake and freeze you.
My rule of thumb is that I overplay the stick side, so my left if he is a righty and my right if he is a lefty and force them to go across my body. Most shooters are not as patient as they should be.
