i woudl recommend going to the atheletic director at your school and lodge your complaint with them. tell them how you feel, and that you think hes a nice guy that maybe should be an assistant before he head coachs again

if a lot more people than just you dislike him you could attempt to start a petition.

we have the total opposite as you. Are coach had been with the team for like 12 yrs and a lax player at navy and maryland. Are senior's sucked so bad this year and didn't listen to him that one day he just quit. This has nothing to do with your story though, sorry
But i dont know ur program. I know that its really hard for us to get a new coach so i would want to keep him even if he knew nothing but if you can get a new coach then talk to the director. He should understand that it is the best for the team.

sthlaxman40, I could never picture Tom as a head lacrosse coach running a program by himself from talking to him. He's a nice guy, like you said, but didn't seem to have a grasp on the mechanics of lacrosse as a whole, nor the leadership or drive to win.
My suggestion is, if the school will allow for parents or team affiliates to help coach do that. If you have one coach that has an OK knowledge of lacrosse, and another who knows how to motivate and coach athletics, then you'd be surprised what a difference that combination would make. I know that since your a senior, it would make a big impact on you but it would help get the program in the right direction for the future.

The biggest inhibitor of the growth of lacrosse is...the lack of coaches.
There are a number of schools that would field a team if only they could find someone, anyone to coach them. This isn't just down here in the South, this is across the nation.
Sometimes you have to play the cards you are dealt. Tom is at least a nice guy who is a lacrosse player. I suggest the seniors step up and take a MUCH more active leadership role with him.
Defensive captain, take responsibility to plan your defense. Decide which set would be best for your team (I'd suggest a zone to make up for individual mismatches and shut down other team's power players). Get on the internet and learn about the elements that make up a strong zone defense. Sometimes mentioning Madden helps people get the concept. Then spend your time at practice getting everyone on board with the defense. Order some videos that teach defensive concepts.
Offensive captain, same thing. Take responsibility for your team scoring points. Get guys hitting the wall, I know you don't need an amazing coach to get your team hitting the wall. Emphasize their need for a left and right hand so they can use the entire field. Get videos on offense and shooting, and search the internet.
Bottom line is you gotta want it. We don't have a bunch of programs down here cranking out lacrosse players. We have dedicated lacrosse players who have to take the initiative to become badass.
You guys do have a school history of strong athletics, etc. Don't balme the coach, if he wasn't there, your lax program would probably disappear.
By the way, have you asked him how much $ he makes?

sthlaxman40...
you are a senior right? are you going to college close by or far away? You could help out by being an assistant...
other than that i agree go to the AD and point things out...
is this a guy that has coached anything else? the not stretching baffles me...
Ask Dave Vollmer from Lamar about him. Played at Syracuse. He had St. Thomas playing quality lacrosse in a very short amount of time. Players loved playing for him. Don't know if he's looking to get back into coaching, but it would be worth a call. Ask Dave about "Whip".

Keep in mind that I am a senior who is graduating in a couple of weeks and no longer play for my high school or this particular coach. But it would frustrate me to end if he kept his job as our coach.
First off, our school is a private catholic school known for having great sports teams and winning state titles. In our three years as a lacrosse club, we have only won 4 regular season games. Our coach is a nice guy and I have personally not gotten into any conflicts with him. I even supported him last year, when people complained about going 2-7, because I thought he deserved more time to tell. After this season, its clear he has lost the "hearts and minds" of my team.
He has no knowledge of the offensive or even defensive schemes in lacrosse, which is very bad for a high level team. He is a goalie coach, but isn't very good at that either. Some Guys who have been playing for three years are still unable to perform basic plays or tasks in lacrosse like picking up ground balls or passing and catching. He takes guys who are playing well out of games and he leaves guys who are playing badly in for extensive periods of time. There is no pattern or organization to anything he does... therefore he has lost the minds of our team.
He shows up to practices late quite often even though he works on his own schedule just a few minutes from our practice fields. He does not show confidence or faith in the team's abilities. He insists on his own obviously false theory that "we should not stretch" even though every lacrosse/sports team I have EVER been on has stretched. We are terribly out of shape and almost every team we play is bigger, faster and stronger than we are. Many inexperienced players have given up on lacrosse because they find no teacher or coach in him.
The worst part: how disorganized he is. Myself and another player had been planning to get our team into a popular area tournament which would have been very beneficial. After nearly a year of helping to get St. Thomas into this tournament, we were not allowed to enter it because our coach did not get the right paperwork turned in. This team lost many valuable scrimmages to develop because of one man's carelessness. Just yesterday, he did not know when our next game would be. What kind of coach does that?
I'm so sick of this guy, do any other players or coaches think I am off-base here? What am I to do about all of that
