In northern Virginia, Navy lacrosse games can be heard, but just barely, on Annapolis's WNAV, an AM station at 1430 kHz. That is about to change. Maybe the change will be for the better, but maybe it won't.

Bonneville International Corp. is expected to announce a multisport radio deal with the Naval Academy's athletic department today that will increase the strength of Navy's football broadcasts and the availability of its men's basketball and lacrosse games in the Washington market.

At least 10 of Navy's 12 regular season football games next fall, plus any postseason bowl, will be broadcast on Washington Post Radio (http://www.washingtonpostradio.com/) (1500 AM, 107.7 FM). All 12 football games plus any bowl game will be carried on WFED, Federal News Radio (http://www.federalnewsradio.com/) (1050 AM), which will also broadcast at least 10 men's basketball games and four men's lacrosse games.

Last season, Navy's football games were heard locally on WTEM (980 AM), while men's basketball and lacrosse games were broadcast primarily on Annapolis's WNAV (1430 AM). WNAV and Baltimore's WBAL (1090 AM) will continue to broadcast the Midshipmen's football games and other Navy events.

Here are the problems. Right now, if you can get WNAV on your radio, you can listen to the games (the home ones at least; I'm not sure about the away ones), but the signal is so weak that it requres dedication. Next year, the signal will probably be stronger in the DC area, but only four games will be broadcast. In addition, the big powerful station, WTWP, at 1500 kHz, is broadcasting only the football games. The less powerful station, WFED, at 1050 kHz, is the one broadcasting the lacrosse games.
