Ii just started my summer job last week laying and cutting tile. I worked 13 hours and made $91. My mom then tells me I have to give her a small cut of the money. What are your thoughts?

well did she have any part in working? like did she drive you or something? and does she have a reason to want a small cut?

MNM19
06-10-2006, 12:11 AM
haha, thats bogus. I would ask her what she wants it for, and tell her that you have a right to know because you EARNED the money, fair and square

also, if she says that she buys you food, clothing, cleans up, etc etc, tell her that that is her job and her responsibility as a parent. Not to be ungrateful, but....

Well, is she letting you stay in her house? eat her food? dirve her car? Your paying rent.. Deal with it. While your under her roof, its her rules.

^^thats what i was thinking. my neighbor drives me to work but i just figured it to be sorta like rent. i'm not really complaining, im just curious.

how old are you first of all? If your 16 or 17 you should not be paying rent in no way.

He's 15. Well nearly. Hey, man I'd call it even if you paid full price for what she gives you in life and your lifetime, you would be very much in debt for lefe.

she could be. i honestly don't know. we're gonna "chat" tomorrow. i'll letcha know how it goes.

That's what my parents do, and trust me it is well worth it. I have enough money to last me all 4 years of college already, and I'm still going to work.

If she takes a small cut of it to put in your savings (my mom takes half) big deal. If she takes half for no reason, that's kind of alot, but like $5 just because she's a parent and maybe she'll buy you dinner or whatever with it who cares. Just as long as your mom isn't buying drugs. . . because - i'm being serious - when your mom said she wanted some of your wages, that's the first thing I thought of.

dude, you're getting screwed twice. Making 7 an hour for laying tile is horrible, you should get double that. It's certainly not easy work.

It's a life lesson. When I get my paycheque every other week, before I see one cent, the government takes it's cut (taxes, employment insurance, life insurance, pension) then part goes into an account where we pay mortgage, groceries, utilities, gas etc etc. What's left over is "mine". After all my expenses it's roughly 3/8 of my gross salary.

Hahaha, knights, paycheque. Ha.

Consider it fair for rent.

do you really want your parents to charge you for what it actually costs to have you live there? I guarantee it would be more than "small cut" of your paycheck. don't complain, you could be homeless out on the streets with nothing to eat. and you're 15, there's not that much you're gonna buy with the money anyways. it's not like you need to pay for rent/gas/vehicle repairs. instead of being pissed about your mom taking your money, be happy that you're 15 and still have some money you don't have to spend on gas. That's where all my money seems to be going lately.

Eventually when I'm a parent of a teen with a part time job, I certainly don't plan on "taking a cut" for myself. I hate the thought of that if it's just headed into ma and pa's general funds........Collecting money from someone else's work for your own use only is akin to pimping!

I certainly don't plan on collecting rent until the kid's done with school for good. The only justification I can see for skimming a cut is to pay towards some luxury that also benefits the teen (such as costs for a teen-use car).

What I think is a good idea, though, is forced investment of a certain percentage of pay in long term holdings. If the teen proves unwilling/incapable of doing this themselves, parents could skim their pay and doing it for them. At some point in the future, hopefully this could become stake money for a car, startup of a small business, a downpayment on a home, for expenses during higher education.......

the only way i would fork any money over was if she was putting it towards college education. if not, tell her to get her own job. you worked hard for that money, and its unfair for her to just freeball off you.

Guys... hes not complaining. Take a deep breath.

At you age, it sounds like shes saving it for your car, insurance, college etc. What could a 14 year old need more than $90 a week for anyways?

I agree with what you all are saying, but i always thought that parents are suppose to raise their kids. Raising their kids means paying for rent, driving them, feeding them, etc. So when two adults make a baby its their Job to raise them, its something they must do. So i dont think kids should pay their parents for raising them, cause thats what parents are for.

P.S. I know bhslax isnt complaining, i was just debating

bhslax12
06-10-2006, 11:27 PM
plus, do you think they paid for things when they were kids? if you think about it it comes full circle. i'll have to do it someday(if my dating habbits change)

i like to think of it this way, in exchange for certain things my parents provide such as food and shelter and not taking any wages i might earn working jobs, i in turn agree not to make a fuss with child services, works out very nicely for both parties:clap:

the funny thing is that 14 years olds really do spend money on riddlin and adaral... crazy i know but with school getting tougher each years and kids getting dumber thats how it goes.

if u think bout when u were 14 and remeber earning money tho you would understand. it was only 2 years ago for me so i remeber, and to have some taken from you would really sux. personally if i were you tho i would no spend that money. i know everyone says this but SAVE IT FOR A CAR. i always laughed about it and was like yea right ill start saving later.i never started tho since it always seemed like petty cash 50-200 most at one time. i truly regret this decision since i have friends who have 3000 saved and started at your age. when i do get a job tho i plan on taking 10% of every paycheck and putting it into a bank account to start saving for when i have to enter the "real world".

you should really have a talk with your mom about where the money is going though. it isnt fair of her to take money without explaining her motives first.

oh and BTW you rlly should have got payed more for that job. if the person whos tiles u had installed had hired a company to do the work it would have cost them in the hundreds. manuel labor is tough and worth a large pay of say 15 dollars an hour, or better yet something like 2 or 3 bux a tile.

my boss I had last summer said that she's had incidents of kids in 3rd grade selling their parents' meds. It's crazy stuff.

its you ADD kids that are selling these drugs and ruinging the teenage population... jp with you man

but it really is crazy my mom is a 1st grade teacher and shes had parents ask her to requist their kids for ADD and ADHD medicine when the kid is in no way ADD. what i have found out is that its not jsut teens using it to get by in school. adults use it as a diet pill since it makes you focus on excercise and not crave food. the scary thing is what it actually does tho to the body. i tried my bros medicine once just to see what it was like and i was scared of how i acted, i got moody and cranky lost all energy and willpower.

edit* i have no prob with using ridiline for SAT and bif finals tho it actually really helps i know people who scored went up by 200 or more jsut becuase they took ridiline and were able to concintrate throughout the test.

ok this my last off-topic post, but did anyone see the south park episode where everyone was diagnosed to have ADD and were all given ritalin? it's a great episode. anyways, the basics of this thread that I agree with: your mom probably has a good reason for taking the money, and probably benefits you, and you need to get paid more anyways.

He's probably getting payed under the table, and taxes aren't getting taken out., and that probably why he doesn't get as much. No tile company should be hiring 15 year olds.

I make 4.50 an hour...cause its a seasonal job. I get taxes taken out (Last week i grossed $37 and got $17 taken out of my check for taxes and uniform...ghey). I'd be mad if my mom took money out of my check.

what are you taking about, taxes were taken out (very little because i wasnt getting paid much) and you can hire people from 14 on, you just need to get a WORK PERMIT from you school.

I was talking about bhslax. If you're actually being legally employed (where you go and fill out an application and do an interview) then I figure taxes are taken out. But if you're really not (someone you know saying, "hey you want to earn some money? Show up at __") and you just show up and learn and work, then no I don't figure taxes will be taken out.

i doubt he did it for a tile company he probably did it for a friends parents or something. in that case whats the problem of him not being taxed? i have had two jobs like that so far this summer and made 170 without any taxes and plan on making more. thats how life is you mow someones lawn they give u 15 bux.

ps what job did you say you had again? cause 37 bux a week is kindof weak.

I never said there was anything wrong with it. i was just justifying the employers lower wages.

I work at a waterpark, doing front gate and the like. I worked like...4 days over like 3 weeks.

I mean if shes the one driving you, she could take a little bit since gas is still expesive, but if she has nothing to do with it, she shouldn't be taking part of your money. You earned it yourself.

It's really not that big of a deal to give a little cash if you can afford too. I always try and give back when I get a check/have some money. I make a significant amount in the summer because I work Scaffolding. If you can afford to give up some money, and at age 14 I imagine $90 in a week gives you a little bit extra to play around with, you should give it up. Even if its only like 10 or 15 bucks. Your mom will probably appreciate it more and I highly doubt that it would be for the sole intention of taking advantage of you.
