These are a couple questions i would appreciate it if they are answered.

1.Eveyone says lip is bad, but dosen't it make the ball go faster,

2.People say just put a nylon string on it, but that totally takes away the whip right?

3.what actually causes lip.

I would like to know the truth and i have tryouts soon and i can't throw right, please help me!

1. not really. the ball always has the same amount of energy, it just stays as potential energy for longer when you have whip. It's a physics thing. but this statement will be disagreed with.

2. not if you don't know how to put the nylong string in.

3. you're actually talking about whip. lip is when the ball hits the scoop of the head. whip is when the ball is held in the pocket longer by the shooting strings, and suddenly jumps over the shooting strings, instead of moving smoothly over them. check out my article on laxnation.com.

no lip doesnt make the ball go faster. putting a nylon in doesnt always remove whip(i think you met lip right?)either way not always. lip is when the ball doesnt take an angle off the shooters that makes the ball release clean. so in order to remove whip you have to get the mesh to release the ball at the correct ange. correct me if im wrong

1. Lip does not make the ball go faster. Think about it. If the ball, normally, deflects off of something, does it end up going faster? No. Plus, it's more friction, whatever... There's no need to go into detail, it defnitely doesn't make the ball go faster.

2. Putting a nylon shooting string on can decrease whip, well, it'll definitely take away lip, but if you're concerned about shooting fast, while it is preference, whip makes the ball go slower.

3. Lip is caused by the ball hitting the plastic scoop of the lacrosse head? This is obviously dependant on the stringing.

there are already some threads on this, but Ill answer your questions.

1: Lip doesnt make the ball go faster, and is inconsistent so I would agree lip is bad. Though some people like lip because they feel the ball coming out of their stick.

2:Putting a tight nylon in doesnt eliminate whip, It just tends to eliminate lip.

3:What causes lip is when the mesh isnt tight enough to the scoop or the shooting strings arent tight enough so the ball rolls of the scoop.

All in all, lip is bad..'
About your throwing, it is probably your form on throwing.

Whip doesnt make the ball go slower...well it does... but when you have more whip, you tend to wind up much farther getting the extra momentum when you release so it is just as fast as no whip. But with no whip, you dont tend to really wind up on a shot so you dont get the extra momentum, but the shooters dont create more friction so it really balances itself out

You just stated that there's added effort to get them to go the same speed. Therefore, whip DOES make it go slower.

I mean, was those post even necessary after you contradicted yourself in the first line?

1. lip doesnt make the ball go faster but you feel the ball coming out better and alot of lip is inconsistent but a little is ok atleast from my experiences with my evo pro (darn thing i cant elimate all lip even with a nylon and tight mesh!!!!!)

2. putting a nylon doesnt always elimate lip (like ive stated doesnt work on my evo pro)but doesnt always eliminate whip(i dont think)

3. when the ball hits off the scoop and is caused when the mesh isnt tight enough....i think im not too sure though

Actually (if physics proves correct) The deflection of the ball against the hard plastic WONT change the speed. I could get a radar gun to test it.

The lacrosse ball and the plastic head will both compress and expand a lot more than you think (we watched a video of tiger woods hitting a golf ball, the thing looked like gelatin). According to newtons "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" law, the force of the ball expanding and the elasticity produced from the lip catupulting it forward should make the ball travel at the same speed, or even faster.

Of course, It's no use to make 110 mph passes only for the ball to go straight down

My physics teacher played lax so ill ask him tomorrow.

But the problem with ur theory is the ball isnt string the plastic directly it is deflecting off it and the direction is being changed, therefore the energy is redirected, which would make the ball go slower. Its like the anolgy of a ball rolling down a street on a hill, it rolls faster if it just rolls straight down rather than if it has to go over a stick. The main problem with lip is the incosnistancy, a nylon actually often adds whip, and to eliminate it a tight topstring like the triangle topsting works better than a nylon.

^makes sense. I'll do a experiment sometime.

of course striking the top of the stick slows the ball down, maybe with a perfectly elastic stick and perfectly elastic ball it wouldn't but they aren't some energy is dissipated in the system its the same as bouncing a ball if you drop a ball it bounces to less than the height you dropped it
some energy is lost, it goes to a variety of places. if it didnt you would have flubber
