Well, as long as your total stick length falls between 40 - 42" and 52 - 72" you're OK. Also, you can't have more than 4 of those long suckers on the field at any one time (not including the goalie, who can pretty much do whatever he wants.)

Yes as laxfan25 said it has to be 40-42" or 52-72".
Spenny, i know in high school it has to be 52" because a kid on my team who played middie used goalie length (40") shafts. He also had his stick checked by the refs every game and no problems with the length, only the depth of the pocket! :dummy:

Mustang21 is correct, dimensins are 40-42 for a short stick and 52-72 for a long stick. Goalies can use between 40-72.

If you go with a 52'' stick then you are going to use up one of the four long sticks your team is allowed to have on the field.

There are no requirements on shaft length, only total stick length, as described in detail above and in the sticky at the top of this forum.

We should note that these are rules for high school and above, frequently youth leagues allow different length sticks.

wait so the goalie's stick is not included in the "4 longpoles on the field" rule right? meaning the goalie could use a long shaft (close to dpole), and still have 3 defensemen and 1 lsm on the field?

Yes, you are correct.
