our coaches are always telling us that if you can see metal on the butt end, its illegal because it can be dangerous if you accidentally (or purposefully) hit someone with the butt end. is this the actual rule? is this style of butt end illegal? there is no metal showing

The rule says the but end must be fully covered, no hole.

you can still do the same butt end, just take two 2-inch peices of tape and put them side by side (a little overlapping) on top of the hole. then just wrap tape around the ends of the pieces of tape so they dont come off. i have been doing my butt ends that way for years and it works great.

I'm not sure whatyou're asking, but Pressure = Force/Area. The smaller the area of the butt end, the more pressure is applied when it hits someone, so if the open end is completely covered it will applly less pressure when it hits someone. (This is why a sharp knife cuts better than a dull one.)

We were playing a kid this year who had no buttend at all on his d-pole. Myself and Orange told our coach who then asked for a stick check. The refs said that it was recently discussed at the meeting or whatever and it was now deemed legal or something like that. Either that or it was nothing more than a stoppage of play to put a butt end on (which is what happened) He then put a rubber butt end on which had a hole in the bottom so the metal was still showing. What is the call ? Should the stick be removed from play ?

There is no penalty for not having a cap or covering on the end of a hollow shaft, but it has to be fixed before it can come in again. If the guy came back in without it properly covered, as happened here, you could give him a USC. It's probably better for the official to say, "No, this still isn't legal; get if fixed right our you'll get a USC next time."

THAT STICK IS NOT ILLEGAL

Based on your personal opinion, or based on the rules?

Note 2: All hollow crosse handles must have their open end adequately covered with plastic, rubber or tape to prevent injury. The use of metal caps (e.g., bottle caps) are prohibited.

The open end of that crosse is not covered.

Yep. Just make sure it's completely covered with enough tape so it's padded and isn't going to hurt anyone. Check it occasionally to see if it needs more tape.
