The main question here is whether using an equipment check to get a penalty on a uniform violation is a legitimate use. Specifically, I'm asking what you think the rules should say, not what they say to do now (they don't really address the topic directly).

you should penalize for the illegal uniform and charge the coach his free check

Uniform Violation: NFHS see rule 1 sec. 9 and 10.
Example: during the requested equipment check, player is found to have compression shorts, peeking out from below his uniform shorts, that are a different color from his teammates.

Non-matching or wrong color helmet, underjersey, compression shorts, sweats, jersey, etc. (NCAA and NFHS).

NFHS rules: The penalty for a uniform violation should be no worse than the penalty for an incorrectly marked field, which has a much greater impact on the actual game of lacrosse. Which is to say, no penalty.
The coaches certify that the players are all correctly dressed, among other things. If Coach A incorrectly certifies that his team has matching underwear, Coach B may always complain to the School A athletic director. For repeated occurences, Coach B may escalate to the School A principal or even write an impassioned letter to the editor of the local newspaper. Coach B could even demand that School A return the TV money!!
Hey, does anybody measure the uniform numbers? How about counting patches and logos? What if the ball doesn't have the sacred NFHS stamp?
Policing fashion doesn't add any value to the game, IMHO.

One time one of the balls in the game didn't have the NFHS stamp. During a dead ball, I mentioned to the home coach that he had to provide NFHS-stamped balls or he'd forfeit the game. He thought I was serious for a second and then I cracked up.

Hah, what a dumb rule.

honestly, why are we looking at little boys compression shorts...? i wear green ones and my team's colors or red white and blue. give me a break, non-matching unis, helmets, gloves, fine- penalize them it does make it rather distracting, but if you're gonna penalize compression short violations, i think we need to concentrate on something else... as a goalie, on a fast break i look for jersey color or helmet color, not underwear or jock color...

If im wrong correct me, but dosnt the compression short rule only apply if every member of the team wears them?

I will correct you:
Whoever is wearing visible compression shorts from team A must wear the same color. In NFHS, this can be any color. In NCAA, it must be white, gray, or a dominant team color. So, under NFHS rules, if only one guy has visible compression shorts, he can wear any color, even hot pink, but if any teammate wears visible compression shorts, they have to match.
