This is going to sound like a really, really dumb quiz, but there's a point to it:
NFHS rules:
During play, A1 is noticed to be wearing:
(a) Gymnastic slippers
(b) Downhill ski boots
(c) Logging boots
(d) In-line skates
(e) No shoes of any kind.
Rulings?

I don't know NFHS, but I'm guessing A,B,C are legal, D might be questionable only if it is considered to have one big metal cleat, and E is probably illegal???

A) I'm going to say illegal, because it doesn't have the same protection as shoes or cleats.
B) I'm also going to say illegal, there would have to be a safety issue there.
C) I'll say legal.
D) Illegal, because they aren't even shoes at all.
E) Illegal, you have to have shoes.

arent they all illegal??
Agreed. Shoes are listed as mandatory equipment. The rule also prohibits Ski and logger boots and other apparel not intended for lacrosse use.

I'm pretty sure they're all illegal... but it would be pretty sweet to be able to wear gymnastic slippers for lax.

1) legal - technically shoes, have a front and back
2) legal - technically shoes, have a front and back
3) illegal - i think logging boots have metal cleats
4) illegal - ...they have wheels...
5) illegal - you need some type of shoes
^^these are all TOTAL guesses.

And gymnasticss slippers! The NFHS rules specifically say you can't use gymnastics slippers! Was there really some dude who tried to go on the field wearing gymnastics slippers?! And would it have been okay if he'd passed them off as ballet slippers? (Not to bust on ballet; former NFL stars Herschel Walker and Willie Gault, among others, used ballet to improve their balance and agility for football.)
Now, what's the ruling?

well, if they're all illegal, then the ruling would probably be that there's no penalty, and they just have to change their shoes.

This is correct, but it doesn't make sense to me. In NCAA, illegal cleats are a 1:00 NR penalty. In NFHS, if your mouthpiece is illegal—which is a danger only to you—you get a 1:00 NR penalty. But in NFHS, if your cleats are illegal, with jagged and sharpened rusty metal, dripping with tetanus, and with the potential to maim anyone and everyone else on the field, you just get told to go switch shoes!
(I've submitted a rule change proposal on this one.)

see, this is where i think some of these rules should be more subjective. like you said, if someone is wearing cleats that are sharpened with jagged points, etc. then it should be at least a 1:00 NR penalty. but, if it's just like, idk, slightly illegal (i don't really know the qualifications) then it shouldn't be a penalty and just have to change cleats.
I think shoe rules in lacrosse are the same, verbatim, as for other field sports under Federation rules...makes for consistency I guess...but as you say the rules don't make sense vis a vis those for mouthpieces, etc.
