I'm watching my tape of the Bridgeport/Baltimore game and B'port played very aggressively when man down and seemed to be successful. WHat do you cats think about that style of man down? The traditional way is to tuck in and give up the outside shot but B'port abandoned that idea totally.

I think if you play really aggresive then everyone needs to be really quick so that you can quickly rotate and leave the guy furthest away from the ball. I don't really think its that good of an idea because if the offense moves the ball around fast enough the'll get an open man that is relatively close to the goal

Based on that, Bport's ball movement offense could beat their own mandown defense, Baltimore's defense had no clue what was going on. What do you think is a better mandown style, the way it's usually played?

I think normal man down d, more layed back. There's no point in being aggresive especially when you don't NEED the ball and you're just trying to get the man down penalty over with. And its especially bad because they don't get a extra pole. I'd say regular relaxed man down d is the best. I think being aggresive would hurt you more than help.

How would it stack up in a league with 4 long poles? Still hurt more than help?

I think man down is better for the defense, because it tells you that you have to play extra hard to stop the attack. You get more agressive.

i prefer a mix. you need to be aggressive and let them know you are'nt just gonna let them score. get in there face and hustle but at the same time dont go chasing them everywhere or go behind the GLE.
you play an agressive man down d where you press ball and adjacents (dont hate on spelling) while spliting the two farthest men away with the backside two. the way this man down d works is that its like an ever turning wheel that presses out hoping to create a shock effect and take away chances. it shuts down lanes and in effect makes the man up o work farther away from each other and harder and further more increasing the chance for error and turnovers. we played this style man down d and have never been scored on when executed correctly

Its not good to be TOO aggressive yknow...last year we had a double man down against Westminster and one of our guys knocked a guy on his butt and made it a triple man down
last year my team had a pretty agressive man down and we had a great year w/ it, our d has a lot of speed which allowed us to work well w/ it...

we play a somewhat aggressive man-down d. we play the ball at about stick's length and the rest of the d shrinks in. if the ball hit the ground and there's any chance at all tha we can get the groundball, we work our asses off till we do. it works really well, because most of our man-down d actually know what we're doin.

I have to admit, I hate mandown, but that is cuz it is mostly me that gets the box...:laugh ...but other than that, when I out, my other teammate and I just beat down as many people as we can, zone of course. But mainly we poke check, and hold each guy back, it has worked very well so far. I only think we lost it once last year...:concerned

i play short stick man down middie and i have to play pretty agressive compared to normal man down.
I usually play on the top of the box. I usually am guarding quick stick middies.
I learned that aggressive man down works only when you play body. For the longest time i was playing man down stick wise, but then i would always get beat. Now i play body and i dont need a long stick anymore. Thats the way short stick middie is won, that and awesome ground ball skills. Then all i have to do is ride and pass to an attack

I say if you have the talent then play aggressive...but most teams do not have that ability...this summer i saw a team try hockey style box plus 1 zone...worked decently...even when a team would put 2 attackmen in the crease this box plus 1 seemed to work fairly well

looked like a 5 on a die...2 guys about post high and 2 guys up top in a box...then the guy in the middle would stand a few yards higher than right on the crease...kind of like a typical man down D but the guy that would guard crease was a few yards above where normally would play...
he kept close enough to flatten a crease man if a pass went that way but didn't play on the crease...by staying sort of in the middle of the 4 guys that formed a box he would pinch over to any holes...i never saw it before this year...
didnt work all the time...but a decent amount...

Are team plays better man down then we do even don't ask me why. We also play really agressive and run 3 long poles. I think the key to playing aggresive man down is a level of communication. Are defense doesn't talk a lot but it seems we know eachother so well that we know what each other is going to do and we know what might happen and where to be. So we can anticipate almost anything. Also we have a real good defensive middie, not the best player but is fast and so aggresive. He's kinda small but has good stick checks and you can see how bad he wants it. That is what I think you need to run a truely succesful mad down defense.

agreesive man down really isnt a good idea , because if u go for they guy with the ball he'll just pass it to the open man
staying tucked in and playing zone is the best time in a man down situation
