What exactely is the purpose of the saddle in customs? should all customs have them? and finally are they necessary?

Its to help shape the pocket and help form the "sitting spot" for the ball

Yeah, they help hold the ball in place when cradling, especially one handed.

Actually I don't think saddles do anything. I think they're just for looks. I don't see how a saddle forms the pocket.

bloodilax977, The ball wont stay where the saddle is so it pushes it farther into the pocket thus forming the pocket

Then why is there a saddle on pookie pockets?

Ouch.

But actually, even the pookie pocket needs to be formed somewhere, right? And the saddle does, even if it means that the pocket is lower, you just move the saddle lower to have a lower pocket.

Saddles also help to provide structure and support to the pocket in general. Keep that in mind when you judge the Pookie Pocket. Even though it is a low pocket, it still needs support and structure. The leathers by themselves are simply not enough for a pocket.

It keeps the leathers at the bottom from splitting.
