Hello

This is my first post!!!:bye I am beginning to coach Defense next year and I was wondering what you guys prefer for drills and skill builders. What are the most effective? Give me as much detail as possible so I can take notes. Our program is only a couple years old and we are starting to really work as a team but now it is time to become contenders with the rest of the league. THanks for all your help......

Okay, there is almost too much to say here...
for field, try givinig the D drills without there poles. You see this works a lot on foot work, which is the biggest thing for the D. So, make the Dmen put their sticks down and do one-on-ones. Another great drill is boxing out. Basically, you get parteners, one attack/mid and one person to be defense-mid or D. Then, drop the ball on the ground. One person, boxes the other out, if the person boxing the ball looses, he does pushups. Same with the other guy if he dosen't finish in a certain time limit. Over all drills, one-on-ones are great. Six on Six, those help too. And working on zone defense is very important as well.

For box lacrosse,
Work with foot work, because you have a small field(easy for the offense to run around on), and a short pole, so it is definatly NOT as easy. Also work on setting up defensive plays, The box, the triangle, and the diamond. Both are all similar figures, and have simple slides. So basically, it keeps the offense out, and if one guy gets by, another slides to help.

But, the best thing to do for field or box is in the footwork.

make sure you dont neglect to work on their stick skills.

this is my first year of coaching and its for a lower division in michigan. one thing i noticed about all the newer programs with new coaches is that they neglect to stress the importance of good stick skills. one of the things i hate the most are gillmans and it comes with the kids not knowing how to catch or pass.

and be sure to teach good position defense and stick checks instead of hits. our d-coordinator that got brought on board this year teaches to hit first which is the stupidest thing in the world. thats not the way to play the game. its one of the reasons our lower division teams get no respect.

Defense is about body position and experience. First you need to teach the proper position, stance and the fact that defense is about making the attackmen go where you want him to and where he doesn't want to. A dodging drill with attackmen woudl be good. You can do a six man rotation, one man behind, one on each side. One on top, topleft and top right. Just blow whistle and go, if attackmen takes to long end it and let the next two go. If the defender lets the attackmen get topside tell him what he did wrong while someone else is dodging.
Also you can do a box drill keep away type deal. 3 on the outside of the box, 2 on the inside. Use cones to mark the 4 corners. Depending on how much you want to make them work depends on your box size. This drill can be a lot of fun and a good work out also.
