You can check out the following site; www.michloa.org. If you go to the recruiting link you can fill out an application. There is no membership fee for refs who are in high school.

Training classes are put on in late fall and the winter to get new guys ready for the coming season. There are ones in Grand Rapids and the Detroit area, and there is an all-day class at the MHSAA in Lansing.

As a HS ref you would be assigned to MS games - there are plenty!
If you are a junior, you can sign up with MHSAA for their Legacy program, where you are put under the mentorship of an experienced official, and you may possibly get worked into JV games.

I hope you follow through! It's a great avocation, especially if you like lacrosse. You get the best seat in the house, and the ability to increase the thickness of your skin!

FYI, if you start sending him flowers and chocolates he may have you barred from the officials' association!

Send him two yellow flags and a hat instead :chuckle:

Chocolates would be okay if it's Mackinaw Island Fudge. :yumyum:
But, those darn stripe shirts have no lapel button holes for flowers, and the colors would clash anyways!

Seriously, we have a few officials who are high school students and also play on teams, and they tell me that they really enjoy officiating especially with the money that they make. As LF25 said, there are more than enough MS games to go around to the point that many of those games end up with single officials due to the shortage that still exists.

Thye really are trying to make it easy, but we need to get all of your info so that we can add you to the distribution lists. Once you sign up, you'll receive e-mails with all the info you'll need for training classes, etc. In the meantime, you may want to pick up a NFHS rulebook (www.nfhs.org or somewhere else) and start looking it over - great bedtime reading! :agree:
MHSAA has online registration for refs - I'm not sure if they will accept you depending on your grade status. I mentioned the Legacy program for junior/seniors. MHSAA is not fond of HS kids reffing MS games, but they don't have control over it, and with the need for officials, the assigners are happy to have you. Experience playing the game is invaluable if you are going to ref lacrosse - I recommend reffing to any players that really like the game.
Oh, and the most important thing if you're going to ref - keep coming to this Forum!

RamLacrosse, i'm glad you followed through (I saw an e-mail with your application, Mr. Flippy. :bye:
BlackHawk, I think there are a couple Arizona-based guys that post on here - CTLaxer is one, but he may only be involved in women's lacrosse. Is Snake-eyes from AZ? Haven't seen much of him on here lately...

Thanks for the help S-E! Where did you find those loa contacts? Is there a master list somewhere?

The ref association for north central and west Connecticut is really good about reaching out to people who are interested in refereeing. From what I have seen, they have a high quality group. Their name is a bit deceptive though, it implies that they handle the whole state, which they do not, as there is a separate association for SE Ct. I actually referee in NY though.

Anyway, good luck on becoming a ref....

I wouldn't call this a master list, but laxpower.com has a good listing of internet sites that I use. Try these links:

I saw the orgs list - not very comprehensive - MichLOA's not on it!

That's why I didn't want to call it a master list!

There are a few other officials org's missing too, but it's the best one I've seen so far.
