I am planning on playing soccer and i dont want to die in conditioning. I would run but i just hate running without haveing something else to do. I would rather do something like a game so i dont focus on how tired i am and such but instead im focusing on the game. Any games that you know of?

So far i have:
Basketball
soccer
Ultimate frisbee

I would prefer games that require alot of changeing direction because i also want to get agile and fast for both lax and soccer.

Does anybody think that doing things like this will make a difference?

OOOO man I love ultimate frisbee. It's a lot of fun and can be tireing (sp?). I used to play handball a lot and I thought it required a lot of runnig back and forth and stopping and changing direction quickly. It required quick feet in my opinion. The couple times I've played tennis it requires a lot of change of direction, but I really don't enjoy tennis but whatever. Also, those long golf cart rides when you play golf drains your energy big time!!!

beach lax is one of my favorites...but seeing you're from chicago it might be hard unless you are near the lake...but even pick up games or wall ball. Ultimate frisbee is good and very fun. But you should still do intense conditioning because it still helps your body but your mind, and work ethic too.

I love ultimate frisbee... jumping on a trampoline gets you in great shape too.

I play flashlight tag in our neighborhood at night, and we run around a lot. Does anyone know how we have 3 replies and 1 view?

If i were to do distance running and sprints would i get better results? I want to be more explosive and be able to change directions well. How could i do that with distance and sprints?

i say you should stick to soccer...if you have friends that play, get together at a field or park nearby and just play pick-up games. they're a lot of fun and you get the running in. or you could play pick-up lacrosse too...same effect.

You can do this alot of ways. All in all, sprints make you more explosive; long didtance builds endurance. You should do both either way. I like to run 40m sprints during my long runs at the end...

Nothing can ever be as good as playing the sport your training for. But I recommend capture the flag. Get 10 kids together and it can be incredibly fun. It's even better when you play in weird places, like hills and forests.

Okay, i made up my own drill where i sprint to a line (about 10 yards away) and sprint back to where I started. Repeat 5 times without stopping. Kinda like a suicide but its just between 2 lines. Is this an effective drill to improve my explosiveness and ability to change directions? I did the drill 5 times, is that enough? Will it get me in shape a bit?

I also jumproped a bit afterwards, mostly just jumping as high as i can. Will that help? What can i do that will help?

I am planning on doing something like that everyday. If i do that and play some basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, or some other sport or game, Will i get more agile, explosive and athletic?

Honestly a good game of basketball is the best training for lacrosse especially if you are a middie or defensemen. So try to find a local basketball league or just start pick up games at the y.

Capture the flag is a good idea. It's gets pretty tiring if you play long enough. Also swimming is a good idea if you have access to a pool. It works out tons of muscles and if you have an above ground pool you can run in it and it gives resistance against your body so its harder.

that sounds pretty good, my thing that i use to do was id to a mile to get my endurance up then, take like a three to five min. break, then do some sprints (20 to 40 yards depending on person) then take another short break and finish with some jump rope

pretty good leg workout

i think u might need a little more then that, but its a good start, i would increase the distance, like for my team for sprints we did 16's, which is when you run back and forth on a basketball court and touch each sideline 8 times each, try that a few times

I have tried running and stuff but i just end up quitting my routine. I would have someone come with me cause then its not so bad and you dont wanna quit because you will be letting them down. The reason i wanna try to make it fun is that I wont quit because i will be having fun. I think that im gonna start regular running thoough

Is 1 and 1/2 miles jogging and then doing my drill 5 times enough for a good workout?

ultimate is incredible exercise....i can imagine that if your training to be a middie that it would be even better, since it's the same amount of running but you don't get subbed out every three minutes. and it's good hand-eye coordination and musle memory and such

Snell, you silly English man, the correct phrase is "no pain, no gain."

You're right, it is more fun and the view is great. Especially if you go to a state park or something.

laxattack1616, the games that you listed on your own, seem like great mimicks of lacrosse, with their speed, dodging (changing of direction), etc. Also try (as childish as itmay seem), tag in a small area (great for endurance and sprinting, and I do believe that it can be lots of fun).

Also, jumping on the trampoline is awesome.

Tennis is awesome man. If you're decent and you have a good partner you can go at it for an hour and you'll be dead. Tennis has tons of change-of-direction, too, so you're working those muscles the whole time.

Swimming is also great for overall conditioning.

Running sprints and miles is fun. So is lifting. You should try those.

woulax23
07-21-2006, 01:38 PM
if you want really good explosiveness..... i mean like you REALLY want it, then you are going to have to bite the bullet and go do some lifting. Sprints can really help your wind and can help your lungs, but you need to put on muscle in your body, legs especially, if you want amazing explosiveness off the line. I think it comes down to your commitment, if you are only willing to do things that are fun to get you in shape then that might not be enough for you. There is a reason that there are proffesional athetes out there, and they do the had, gritty stuff that no one else likes doing because it makes them above the rest. If you want that speed right off the line, or out of your dodges i would suggest tying an old rubber tire around your waist and doing ten yard sprints with that, or get in the weight room at your school and do some squats, leg curls, leg extensions, and some dead lifts. That, along with your long distance, will get you fast.

whats the difference between an above ground pool and in ground? I just go down to the street court and ball with tha' brotha's and they sure can throw it down..........YO. but that works well specially when you play with people better than you and 3 v3 is better than 5v5. Sometimes i like to dodge cars in traffic like in dodgeball, that works well. One time me and my neighboor put on football shoulder pads and like fake plastice helmets and did 1 on 1 w/ a alltime QB and that was a good work out i was dying at the end and it started as a joke.

In football camp, my coaches taught me a fun game. They call it potatoe ball. You play on a football field, or a field with endzones marked out.You have 2 teams of 3 or more each. One team kicks off to the other, and the game begins. The offense with the ball tries to move it upfield. The person with the ball can run it up the field, or pass it. The Defense is trying to tag the other team's player w/ the ball. The Offensive player who has the ball must say freeze before he is tagged by the defense. Once he or she says freeze, they have to freeze. They then have to pass to a teamate, who must say freeze before they are tagged. If the Defense tags the offensive player w/ the ball before he says freeze, then they get the ball. It an incomplete pass is made, they get the ball from where it lands. They then become the offense. The first to score 5 times wins. This game is better with more people. This is very tiring if the field is big.

Ultimate frisbee is such a good workout. If you just play outside with your friends it's awesome and you don't even realize how much you work until the game is over. In my neighborhood we can play for hours without stopping. It also is filled with lots of change of direction and whatnot since you need to run to play defense, then break out to play offense. I definetaly think you should play Ultimate Frisbee.

Heres my opinion on a few of the sports I've beening seeing listed on this thread
Basketball: Pretty good, works your left hand, keeps you running, and some of the same concepts as lax.
Ultimate Frisbee: If you're going for straight up conditioning, this is the sport for you.
CTF: Well, there's a lot of stopping and starting. For lax, and especially soccer, this wouldn't be the MOST helpful.
Tennis: Probably one of the best. Definetly good for agility, pretty good for conditioning, but not as good as Ultimate Frisbee.
Tag: Pretty good. Always a good option.
Boxing: Uhh....definetly a workout. Never done it, so no comments.
Paintball: Maybe for explosiveness...
DDR: Well, if you are really good, and can do the super hard ones, this may well be the best option. Requires your legs to be SUPER quick, and requires some serious endurance.
Swimming: Definetly for endurance.

My verdict: Go swimming, then go play DDR. Then eat.

I do plyometrics twice a week at my gym with a bunch of friends. If you can get a couple of friends to do some plyometrics or weight work with you, it can actually be a lot of fun.

But if you want games, anything in the water is good, because even if your not swimming the resistance from the water can help your explosiveness. Pool basketball in the shallow end is really fun. No rules as long as you're not like punching people. Grabbing, pulling, shoving is all allowed. Don't go too crazy though. Me and my brother always make up races whenever we go swimming. Doggie paddle races are incredibly tiring. Only kicking races. Only arms races. Dolphin kick race. Get creative.

If you want to play capture the flag then i suggest when you get tagged instead of being in jail you have to run around the play area a few times then head back to your base. It makes it so you dont even care that your tierd because you just want to get back in the game.

BTW This wont really work for 9th grade up but try just town camps.. regular camps were you do many differant activities.
