View Full Version : unwritten rules of lacrosse

Canadian Lax

Okay guys i thought we should make a list of the unwritten rules of lacrosse. Things that are not part of the rule book, but every lax player knows. So i'll start it off in no particular order.

1.) Never touch another players stick without permission

2.) if you do have permission, you still NEVER touch another players shooters, or and other part of stringing. Because all lax players know that we have all spent endless hours getting our sticks to throw exaclly how we want them to.

3.) i dont know if this one applies to feild lax, but in box if your going to fight then be a gentalmen and take off your own helmet.

4.) If you run your mouth in a game, you cant back down from a fight.

5.) never be the third man in the fight, let the two guys scrap it out.

6.) No matter how great or crappy of a game you've played have character and shake hands at the end of the game.

7.) Respect the game for its traditions and teachings.

8.) If your at a tourny dont be cheap and steal other players equip.

9.) What happens on the feild stays on the feild.

..............keep adding on

I usualy play as a gentlemen, but when the game is on the line. I throw all these rules out the window.. and theres only one rule that counts

1) win at all costs.

If that means bust some dude in the balls, its gona happen, if that means cleating some kid.. then thats gona happen.

But i dont play competitivly any more, well then.. so im gona chill.

What if your goalie is so bad that he lets a ball roll in from the restraining line?

You play as a team, you win as a team, and you lose as a team. If he's the best guy your team can put out there, then you need to score enough goals and play good enough defense to win. People are too quick to try to point the finger everywhere else but at themselves when they lose.

If you must have these thoughts, keep them to yourself. I'm sure the goalie realizes he let up a soft goal and feels bad enough about it.

The reason why you're supposed to keep your helmets on when shaking hands after all contact sports is because if something does happen and a kid goes after you with a helmet on and you're not wearing yours....well, it's not pretty.

Aaaah, I see. Lots of people break the law, so it's ridiculous for me to get in trouble for it.

Selective enforcement is not a defense. There could be 1000 people underage drinking on the street, and if the cop picks you out to arrest, too bad for you.

Ball's dead while you're being checked - have your coach or captain request a check against your opponent maybe?

One of two things might happen

1) the other FOGO will start playing with a legal stick so you can actually gain an advantage by cheating with your own stick

2) If both of you end up with stick penalties, the other coach may realize what a frigging annoying waste of time all these stick checks are and get himself a life!

That happend to one of our d-men...This guy is a tank, he saves at least 2-3 shots a game with his body, but one game he was only wearing a zoombang shirt, and it hit him in the kidneys I think...He was coughing up blood on the field after he cleared it, and on the sideline.

Couldnt play the next couple games, only the last game of the season. Even then he had to wear a chest protector.

I've always said this. If the game's in hand, share the ball. (Only exception is if one of your superstars is gunning for a league scoring title towards the end of the season......I figure part of teamwork is helping key team members achieve success.)

To make it even more fun, you should spread the work around - put your d-men up on attack or offensive mid, let the attackers/O-mids swing the poles, and make the lazy-arse goalie run the field for a change!

If you are playing summer league with out ANY pads or mouthpiece, don't ask the ref for a slash every time you go near the cage.

Why is it that the 30+ players always seem to be the ones who show up with no protective gear? You think they would be a little smarter than the 16-24 year olds. Not much funnier to me than an old geezer attackman attempting to take on two full equiped college d men with no pads.

Beach ref.. possible reason is some of the 30+ players (And I am one) played without pads when we were 16-24 and we forget that we aren't that age or invincible anymore...

I played with guys who only wore gloves and helmet, becasue theyw eer mandated... and that is still how they play.. but they also don't complain about hits or bruises..

#39 If you get railed, don't go looking for the smallest guy on the other team; hit the guy that hit you.

We smaller folks don't appreciate that.

In a fight first make sure the other person's stick is away from them. Never worry about taking off you bucket, if it looks like you two are going shoot a fair one then then by all means square off and git er dun;but in most cases your more concerned about taking their helmet off not yours.

When time is running out on the clock and shot, or pass is thrown from across the field, or from a far towards your direction don't be so eager to go for it. Depending on how the game is going if your on the receiving end of the ball with barely any time to do anything effective some loose cannon might pick this as the perfect time to rail you while your in range of the ball.

Along with rule #76: don't play for the calls, play your game. Not all refs are the same, and not everyone of them are going to make the calls. Don't stop until the ref blows that wistle; that means stoppage of play. Play through the slashes, play through the pushes from behind and all those dirty moves and if the ref doesn't call it get back at your opponet with a play that leads to a goal. If someone wants to throwdown because they can't stop you then thats their fault BUT by all means defend yourself. Referees officiate the games, its up to you and your team to decide who's going to win them.

This is good advice. As officials, we try to be in tune to this sort of thing developing and put a stop to it (you'll notice a very high percentage of illegal procedure violations on faceoffs with under 10 seconds left in chippy games that have already been decided). And we do have the power to eject someone for a late cheap shot, which generally carries a suspension, but we can't always prevent the cheap shot from happening.

Some people were saying if any one goes into the crease have the golie smash them, well it works the other way to. if the goalie decides to run up the field, eliminate him with extream prejudece.

Yes and no.

The next unwritten rule is that if anyone roughs up your goalie more than is necessary, you cripple that stroker the next chance you get.

The reason why you're supposed to keep your helmets on when shaking hands after all contact sports is because if something does happen and a kid goes after you with a helmet on and you're not wearing yours....well, it's not pretty.

If your a D and you're killing a team, don't take it all the way up and scored.

A kid on my new hampshire team did this to long island. I felt bad for 'em.
one of the players on the team im on hes almost did it 4 or 5 times last season he has the worst luck he gets to the goal and is .5 sec from shooting and the whistle blows then we have to hear him ***** about it then he lays someone out and is fine

Said in a conversation i was having at the Referees dinner during the World Champoinships .....

What if your goalie is so bad that he lets a ball roll in from the restraining line?
If you think your goalie is so bad why dont you try it. On my team we didn't have a goalie so someone voluntered and he sucked a monkeys uncle but none of us would do it and it pissed me off when the new players would complain about it.

go up to him and say u did it because the human reaction to a spank is really funny

25. at a tournament, do NOT put dog poop in another persons pocket, unless it is leather because leather takes a long time to string and the poo will ruin it

15.) Always stick up for your team mates on and off the feild

16.) If another player steps into your crease, make him wish he never had, always protect your goalie

I'd amend this and say that someone who wrecks your goalie should expect to leave the game on a stretcher.

Unless you hit 6+ pipes in a single game and then you are just plain unlucky but even then all it warrants is a "man i have horrible luck" comment, nothing more.

46. if you are going to play "hit the goalie in the head" or pipes or anyother bs when you are up alot don't broadcast it and keep it amongst yourselves.
