Get in touch with the coach. Find out all the information you need to know. Just wondering, what school?

Ohio State is a decent lax school. Definitely get in touch with the coach. Make sure you definitely will have a shot to make the team. Give him your info. Such as Height, Weight, 40 time, Weight Lifting Maxs, H.S. stats, H.S. honors. Also get info about the club team just in case.

Ohio state is very hard to get onto as a walk on, one of my friends had 41 goals and 40 assists and still didnt walk onto the team his freshmen year. However he is getting a tryout in august. He says that they will take maybe let 2-3 walkons do fall practice and fallball before the season starts, of those that practice with the team 1 will still be there before the season starts.

Make sure that you're registered with the NCAA clearinghouse before trying to walk on. You still need to comply with NCAA eligibility rules even as a walk on.

Anybody knows if you do make the team as a walkon any scholarship possibilities?

Yes and no. Most cases if you walk onto a team, you're getting no money that first year. The coach may like you and see that you have a future with the team and could offer you a scholarship for later years. Or the coach might see no future in the walk-on and might not even make the team the following years.

Walk ons should treat their situation just like recruits. Contact the coach give them your info, register with the clearinghouse, keep in contact with the coach, ask how intrested they are and keep in shape. Don't be discouraged, even recruited players can not make the team.

I know Division 1 schools usually scout most of their players but I was wondering how the whole tryout and walk-on thing works.

i think you have to talk to the coach about it beforehand, you cant just show up, and i hate to be negative but walking on d1 sounds pointless, you give it your all during weightlifting sessions every morning, 5 mile runs, all the practices, and theres a good chance you wont even get on the field but thats just my opinion, sound like a lot of work with no rewards

If you aspire to play D1 and wish to walk on, contact the coach with your intentions and go from there.

Shootandfeed, what do you think happens to the typical recruited frosh or even sophomore? Unless you're a standout and work your butt of in offseason, chances are you're going to be just like the walk on (assuming they made the squad) and riding the bench for a year or two. At some places you'll get more time, but don't expect to be starting all of the games whether your a frosh or a walk on. You have to earn your spot on the field and chances are you're not going to be ready your first season for that starting position (or that much time on the field).

EDIT-I'm just going to merge these threads.

I have a question about playing time. Lets say i am a walk on and am going to go play ofensive middie at Duke. Here is the thing though, I am on the lower percentile of the team skill wise.
How much playing time a season would you get?

absolutely none....well, maybe some garbage time like the 3rd string PGs in the NBA....if you work real hard and show the coach desire and passion, you may get 2-3 minutes in blowout games

yeah walk ons are pretty much just there for practice. they get the raw end of the deal really because they are probably going to work the hardest in practice, and are going to get the least playing time in games. youll basically be rudy. so just work hard and maybe youll get a little playing time.

No matter who you are, if you're a walk on, frosh or some other player on the team, you have to earn your spot on the field. It's not that you'll be a walk on that prevents you from being a starter or player that sees a lot of time, it's the fact that you're in the lower percentile. Coaches are going to play their best players, end of story. You could even be a recruited freshman to Duke, but that doesn't mean you'll get any playing time whatsoever. If you work you butt off and become one of the better players, you'll see time, whether you're getting the money or not (although it is possible to earn a scholarship later on in your career).

I don't know if I would relate this to Rudy though. Yes, Rudy was a walk-on, but he lacked size so from the beginning there wasn't too much hope for him. In lacrosse, size isn't too much of an issue so it's very possible to put as much effort and passion as Rudy did and actually see playing time.

I think your biggest obstacle is actually making the team though.

For those of you considering walking on, last season my team went to an OSU game and we had a chance to meet their head coach before they played. He said about 8,000 kids tried out and he took 12. So your shots at walking on at OSU are slim unless you are darn good.

I dont believe that. Theres about 38000 undergrads at OSU. Of that, half(19,000) are male. You're telling me that of 19,000 male students, 8,000 tried out for the lacrosse team? No. Maybe I would believe 800, but theres no way i'm believing that nearly half of all male students tried out for the team.

more likely than 800 would be like 80. I mean no offense, but lacrosse isnt THAT big yet.

12/80 is still really tough. A kid from my school that just graduated has a full ride to OSU for lacrosse. I guess he did a good job exposing himself.

He could mean 8,000 in the programs history and only 12 have made it.

our crazy varsity defenseman Matt Kawamoto got a scholarship for OSU and will be playing for them next yr. He also just got invited to try out for the U19 Team USA. Try to get in touch with him when he's there this summer at OSU.
