Witch is better, showing the coachs that you can score and are a good player and ball handler, or being a team player and not trying to score as much and passing more?

I am sort of in the middle here, but I voted team player anyways becuase I feel that you should support everyone else. A point is a point, no matter if its a goal or an assist. You should also drve to the cage sometimes, but not always.

i think your should have half and half you can set up a good shot for someone and you can drive it in and get yourself a goal

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky. I say that if you have an opening, take it. If you just keep passing the ball and not taking any risks then get off the field. In lacrosse, oppourtunites don't present themselves, you must make them. I'm by no means saying drive to the cage everytime you touch the rock. No, what I mean is try it once, if he makes you look like a fool, don't try again. If you do good, and create a scoring oppourtunity, try it again.

I voted the 1st and 2nd one because you have to be both! To be a good all around player you need to be able to score when your teams needs it, but you also need the ability to be a team player.

i said other...i hate it when guys just drive in to a zone defense & get crushed thinking they're going to make a play but at the same time every now & then you need that guy that will drive in draw some guys & then dump it off to get things going...Basically if you can (especially if u're playing middie & have a short stick on u) feel free to take a guy 1 on 1 & get an easy goal for your team but don't go off trying to be a hero...be sure to include all team members

Showing your teamates that you are an "impact player". Meaning that you make a difference for your team, if they didn't have you that day they would be loosing a big part of their team and they wouldn't have that great of a chance of winning. So when i go out on the field i try to make things happen so they will see me as an impact player.

BOTH ARE IMPORTANT!

-If you take the ball to the cage through a crowd of D-men and fail to score, while one of your teammates was open, the coach is going to be pissed.

-If you make a cute pass when you had a clear lane to drive to the net and shoot, the coach is going to be pissed.

Best thing to do is keep your head in the game, read the field, know where your teammates and opponents are, and adjust your play to whatever the situation demands.

make the right decision when its necessary, if you have an opening, take the shot, or take your man to the goal. If you dont have anything, look for the open man and get the ball there.

unfortunately the "skills" you posed as poll answers are important, but tend to show up differently.

individual skills show up instantly.. a lot of times people will notice good ball handling, shooting, and finishing ability a lot quicker than they notice your unselfish play..

being a team player shows up more during the long haul; either through the course of a game, or a practice..

you might be able to dodge the hell out of your defender, score at will, and all that, but if you are missing open looks, etc.. it will show up over time..

see what i'm getting at?

let's say it's your first day of practice...

you blow by your defender, shoot, and score.. ok.. coaches think.. "damn.. he just blew by our best defender...".. etc.. etc..

but if you keep doing that, and get stuffed a few times, and miss the open looks.. they will say something like.... "man, he's good, he's just a horrible team player".. a ball hog.. we'll have to work with him

your best bet is to have a combination of both skills... it's a team game, yet at the same time, it's an individual sport... no one ever said michael jordan should have passed it when he broke scoring records, yet no one would say he was selfish..

so be a little selfish and a team player at the same time.. you just have to find the right balance..

you cant win a game with no goals, and only passes.

but you still need passes in order to win. so it should be in the middle of them

100th post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :naughty: :runaway:

Its not messed up people can pick more than one thing. so the percents will be above 100

I coach, and last three posts are right on. But I don't equate driving with shooting. If I set 2-2-2 formation I depend on driving. But I want the D to slide, and want the driver to shoot if he has a good shot, or get the pass to the weak side for a better shot. If he takes bad shots, he is just a poor player. The key to a team player to me is his offball movement. Will he pick for his teammate.

i'm going along with pretty much everybody here, you have to create an equal balance of the two.

It's better to be a team player and contribute, but if you want to stand out to coaches, then you have to stand out from among the players. My coach once told us that he 'Will praise an assist just as much as a goal' but in all reality, the feeder gets a pat on the back, the scorer gets hoisted on everyones shoulders.

A little bit of both and you shall suceed. :agree:

you dont always want to score cause then you look like a ball hog, and you dont always want to pass because if your team needs a goal your coach probably wont put you out. so like laxpro said if you combine both of them then you will succeed and will be a coaches favorite
