I know you can rip CD's to your hard drive, but i was wondering if you can do the same to a DVD. I have a bunch of DVD's i want, but dont want to carry the disc around with me.

Yes there is but it is kind of illegal because you have to circumvent the copy-protection. But I can help you just what do you want to put the movie on? Ipod?

i dont want to put them on an ipod, i just want to copy them to my laptop hard drive, that way i can carry a few movies with me without having to carry the physical disc around.

yeah, you can do this.
theres a tutorial on here somewhere of how to download the software and what software to get.
i think a mod did it.
search for it or ask a mod.

It's perfectly legal, if he doesn't intend to sell the DVD's. He's just backing up what he owns.
Here's the other thread though.

Well to rip a normal DVD, depending on length, special effects, etc, usually takes about about 6-8 Gigs, and to actually rip it to your hard drive it takes about 1 hour.
After that... converting to the right format~1 hour, then burning it~another hour, and you have a backup DVD.
So basically it will take you 3 hours and about 10 gigs of HD space...
Hmm Franks what program do you use? I use DVD Decrypter, then compress it with DVD2One(so it can fit on one disc), and then a free trial of Nero7 to burn it. Comes out with 100% quality with no stupid menu or previews(which is preference).

Ripping/encoding/burning takes a little under half an hour with dvd shrink and dvd decryptor and takes up approx 4 gigs. But you can just delete it when ur done.

well the other thread is a little vauge. im not planning on burning to a new DVD, just to copy to my HD. I kinda figured that it dont need the shrink, just the Decypter.
so all i do is stick the DVD inot my drive and hit start and its copied, then hit play and watch it?

Dvd shrink can rip it to you computer and take up way less space. The most it will ever take up is 4 gigs compared to 9 wtih other decrptyers

i got some sort of error message about it being protected. I used shrink, but it still seems like that program is meant to copy it to a blank disc, which is not what i wanted.
when i used decypter, it made a floder full of files that i had no idea what to do with. Which ones are the movie files that i can play?

Dvds are usually around the size of the 7 gigs, but you can compress them with like winrar to make a 3 gig file.

Here is a guide for decrypting it goes over both ISO and IFO modes in DVD Decryptor. I think what you need to do is either get it into IFO mode and then convert that file intoa playable file or you can get the ISO and mount it using Daemon tools. Go to the Decryptor tutorial.

so once i use IFO, what, or how, do i convert it into a playable file?

Cant you use daemon tools to view a dvd decrypted or shrinked movie...? I believe this is what I did this past school year. I would put the movie onto my comp because I was unable to watch it at the time, but I would watch it then delete it...
shrink is about 4.35 gb
decrypter is about 8-9 gb

Daemons emulate bin and cue / iso files.

This is probably your best bet. Get the iso file and then just mount it with Daemon Tools. Converting would take longer and you probably wouldn't get the same quality.

DO NOT discuss illegaly copying DVD's. Only rip DVD's to you HD, that you personaly own, and do not use this ability to distribute DVD's. That is illegal and not allowed to be discussed on TLF. Thank you.
