Ok, I am 5'4 and i weigh 116 pounds. Is my size to small to be a goalie?

Theres no perfect body size for a goalie...in fact I think the smaller you are, well within reason, the better goalie you are. if you put a cow in there then he wont be doing much. But if you put a smaller quicker guy/girl, then chances are he/she will be better.

So over all, you are a good size.

I have had goalies come in all shapes and sizes, and by far the best goalie I have had the pleasure to coach was this one boy who everyone thought wouldn't make it through try outs.

He is roughly 5'2" 140lbs, basically a little mole man. To everyone's surprise, he went from knowing nothing about lacrosse to being starting goalie in roughly a month of practice and then started and played almost every game we had.

He was outstanding.

It really won't be your size as much as your skill that will define you as a goalie. As long as you work on fundamentals, stay focused, have good reflexes that you do your best to hone, and most important, do not put yourself down. Stay positive.

You can play goalie.

Its all on your style of play. Some goalies use ther size but if youhave quick hands and good reaction you dont need size

yeah the goalie from cortland was big and i mean big. My first impression of him was that he would be slow but he was really really good so i don't think theres any set body size

Goalies can be any size really. You dont want to be too large. Especially in box because all your bulk is at the top. If you're too tall then you're all legs and thats where you wanna shoot anyways. Its better to be wide. If you look at some of the best pro goalies they aren't overly large. Once you get to the point where everyone can thread the needle sheer size doesnt get you anywhere, you need some speed and agility.

Some of the best goalies in the NLL;
Dallas Eliuk - 5'10'' 175 lbs
Steve Dietrich - 5'9'' 250lbs

Some of the best goalies in the MLL;
Greg Cattrano - 5'9'' 190 lbs
Trevor Tierney - 5'11'' 200 lbs

What about Alex Cade from San Fran, hes 5' 8" and 165 lbs. He starts in front of Aaron Fenton and is AMAZING.

I think that he's a little fat i mean i havent seen what he looks like without his gear and that muscle weighs more than fat but i really dont think he's all muscle.

And look at Jeremy Blevins, goalie for UMBC. I don't know his "dimensions", but at camp, most of the campers were taller and bigger than him. But still, they made it to the NCAA tourney and went undefeated in league play. Can't matter too much, can it?

I myself am 6 and played at 195 in college (weigh 185 now; don't wok out like I used to) but I think when it comes to goalies size is barely relevant.
I say barely because if you're 5'2" you will have an advantage on getting down on low shots and have a harder time on high shots (I've coached kids this height). The opposite is true for a goalie who is 6'2". He has an advantage high and a harder time getting low (I've coacxhed kids this height up to 6'6"). Here is the main point, though. That advantage can be minimized to nothing if you put the work in. Brian Carcaterra springs to mind-he was short but practiced a ton and his height was a non issue. He was also a stellar athlete out of the cage; he used it to his advantage.
Of the four field positions, I think size is of least importance in the goal. And you can be a successful goalie at 5'2". You may get manhandled or have to be exceptionally quick to dominate at a/m/d at that height. I've coaches in the past, and on our JV team I converted two shorter middies into goalies, and one of them is now the varsity starter. He's 5'4", a senior, and tearing it up. So if you're short and wanna be a star, goalie is the perfect position.

90 pounds!?! That's unhealthy!! Even if he is stopping shots that doesn't sound like a healthy weight for someone of 5'3.

Actually according to the man himself, Ben Gabel (Cortland's goalie), tips the scale at over 280 pounds. And he's only 5'10" I think.

I am 6'6'' tall and just started in a mens league. I find my most tough shots are the low bouncers. In my 1 1/2 months of playing so far, its really about angles and how quick you are. At 6'6'' tall, I take up a lot of the goal and I have also made my fair share of head saves, which is really fun.

Yea, height doesn't matter...for me at least. I'm 15 and I'm around 5'6", 115 and I became the starting goalie this year for my varsity team as a frosh. I competed very strongly aswell at the varsity level at my size. I'm still growing but for now height isn't a factor.

170 if i was 170 i would be as thin as a twig, if your 6ft you should be built a little bit and weight like 200ish

I'm 5'1" weigh 90 pounds and I am now in highschool.. I'm a freshman. So don't worry about your size. There's advantages for both. If your small, then you are most likely faster and quicker to the ball. If you are bigger you may be a little bit slower but since you are bigger you take up more goal space.

ur tiny PinnacleGoalie, but id say 5'8-6'1 150-190 would be the goalie size. Ive had to huge (fat) goalies and they are terrible because they can barely move. The only good fat goalie ive seen is that one from Cortland State

Don't forget Chris Sanderson. Goalie seems to be one of those positions that your body type doesn't really matter as long as you can perform. It's not like say football where a coach probably won't even look at a lineman recruit if he's not over 200 pounds.

im bout 5'9 and 210 but when i began freshman i was 5'5 190 and i was the starting varsity goalie.

I dont think weight has as much a factor as height as everyone says. i would say a perfect height for a goalie is about 5'11 so they their head just touches the top of the goal and its still a reasonable height to save both low and high shots. i know from my past three years as varsity goalie being short can be a disadvantage cause i get scored off of right over my helmet a decent amount of times and being only a few inches taller can mean more saves without really anymovement

PinnacleGoalie
07-24-2006, 12:02 AM
Yeah but if your small and are a goalie you sort of should be able to save a shot coming right over your head so that shouldn't be a disadvantage. Yes being taller does make less movement some of the time, but how much has it really changed the game? what's the difference of being tall and saving them and being small and saving them. As long as your saving it why does it matter? Who cares if you get hit and save it and barely move or you make a great save? I'd rather have a tight save than just being big and that being the reason of you saving them... Thats why i like Matt Russell

Yeah, if you are big and have quick reflexes good for you, but I think people stress over height body type and wait as a goalie too much. There is no perfect size for a goalie. As long as you practice and work hard and be the best you can be then height and weight doesnt matter. I dont understand why so many people say that small people cant do things like biger people do when that's not usually the case. An example is Matt Russell like i said above. I don't think you understand what he goes through each day. For one he played on Navy and is 5'7". He is now playing pro and he made it through navy with bootcamps, hard work, and he then managed to be a great lax goalie being small. That just goes to show you that anyone of any size can do ANYTHING as long as they practice and devote time to it. It's up to you. If you would like to be a goalie practice, don't worry about how tall or how small you are because that really should NOT be a factor

As long as you play big and keep you hands up, you will be fine. When i started in goal in 8th grade, i was around 5'1-5'2, and i'm still only 5'7.
