Just hope that your college both accepts it and that they accept a 3...
It sounds like he is shooting for the type of college that will accept a 3.
This isn't the right attitude to have about your schoolwork guys... "YAY, I DID NOTHING AND I GOT A 3!" in highschool will turn into "I DID NOTHING AND IT TURNS OUT I ACTUALLY GET THE GRADE I DESERVE" in college.

your score is put on a scale of 1 through 5
5 and 4 are very good
3 is good
2 and 1 are not so great

haha yeah trust me man i know. im more of a person who's most likely going to do better in college (well...thats what i want to do). i personally dont like the atmosphere of high school. everything is run so strict and in line. i dont like that. it cramps my style... :nofear: ...yeah but this was one of the few classes where i really didn't try at all...i still got a good grade though...pretty damn hard too..and yeah i plan on going to university of north texas as a music major, and they take 3's

AP courses are the biggest ploy ever. Teachers tell you that they can go towards college credits, but this is generally a lie. Most dont accept them, and outside of a few, you need a 4 or 5 to get the credit. The other thing is, even if you do well, you only get one credit, and most college courses are 3 credits per class, so you need to pick up 2 more credits elsewhere.

I got mine today. I got a 4 on my Calc AB test, which gets me out of that class this fall. I got a 3 on my Physics: Mechanics test. Not enough to get out of the class, but I thought I barely got a 2 way back in May.

Somebody put it in simpler aspects, but it's more like this.
5 You will definetly get college credit
4 You will almost certainly get college credit
3 You may get college credit
2-1 Not getting college credit
So basically what these tests are are to get college credit for courses your college offers. Let's say I get a 4 on AP Bio. If I go to Harvard and they only accept a 5 for college credit, I will have to take that class again when I go to Harvard. Or if I go to Arizona State where they accept a 4 for college credit, I won't have to take that class freshmen year, and could either just enjoy the free hours, or take a more advanced Biology class.
My scores (haven't gotten senior year scores yet so they are a '?'):
- AP European History: 4
- AP US History: 4
- AP Literature and Composition: 3
- AP Macroeconomics: ?
- AP US Government: ?
- AP Language and Composition: ?

well, theyre not a complete waste of time. if they dont accept the ap as straight up college credit, many colleges use AP's as prerequisites to allow the student to skip an introductory course or whatever and move on to a higher level course, even though the student doesnt receive credit for that skipped course. i know that USC for one has this process. :agree:

Is this why my friend got 8 hours at UVA for every 5 he got? yeah? he's almost done with his freshman year before ever going to the school.
Unc gives 6 hours for ever 5 i think, and duke is around the same.
So i dont see what your talking about.
App state gives 7 for a 5 and 5 hours for a 4 and will accept a 3, but only for 3 hours a think.
Most schools actually do accept AP credits.
Have you ever taken an AP class/exam? and applied to any colleges then asked about your ap credits? Or are you just talking smack because your school doest offer AP gym?

meh... why bother with AP exams? I'm gonna be in college for 4 years regardless... might as well get the full education - and my guess is that the college course offered is much better than the high school version
my school doesn't do AP classes.... they don't believe in them, and I'm inclined to agree with them
I am SO ticked that I only got 3s on both my AP English exams. SO FREAKING mad. Plus all it tells you is the score, and only one number for 3 hours of using every ounce of mental energy you have! I left AP Language thinking, well, one essay wasn't so great, so probably a 4. I mean, I was killing Language practice essays. We got a new teacher this year, and the former one graded some of our practice essays, and she's been a grader before, so I trust her. I usually averaged a 5 (out of 9, for the curious) on AP Lit essays, but in the last month I managed to get up to 6s and 7s. AP Language, the first essay I wrote was in April and I got like a 6+ or something. So either I bombed the multiple choice (unlikely, even in AP Chem I got at least 45% and I had no idea what I was doing, so I should have at least 70-75%) or my essays weren't as good as I thought. Still, I got 3 3s so that means I'm an AP honor student or whatever, or something. I get 18 credits at BYU before I even start, which is freaking sweet. That's like a semester and a half. Plus I get to skip English 115 and instead I'm going to take a technical writing class, something I've always wanted to take. I should have read more before the test. Just in general. Now I read all the time. Dang it. Oh well, I passed, but a 3 in English classes is like getting a D in gym for me, to put it that way. Dang it.
Oh yeah, do you ever get more than the original score? Like, how they scored each essay? I'm curious.
mmlax123
07-08-2006, 12:05 PM
no they usually don't tell you how you did on the essays. in fact, ap is very secretive--they only release multiple choice questions every 5 years or so to teachers and you never get to see what you got right or wrong.

Hey guys, Im taking a couple Ap classes next yr for the challenge, but the concept seems pretty lame when considering two things.
A) Not every college excepts ap credits, so your 5 on Ap Bio means nothing
B) Dont we go to college to attend not to get out faster?
Now, in my school no one seems to know the real grading scale. Is an Ap class worth an extra .5 or .05, a big difference. Then 1-2 teachers think an "a" in an ap or honors class gives you a 5 instead of a 4. So an "a" is 5 and a "b" is 4 and so on. What is the gener consensus, knowing full it can change state to state. I just wanna put together the norm and compare.
mmlax123

at my high school, ap and honors were 6, regulars were 5, and basic was 4.
in regards to the value of ap, it's definitely worth it. even if you don't get credit, schools like to see that you took them and that is a help with admissions. also if you do get credit, you spent 82 bucks instead of spending who knows how much at the school for however many hours you get credited with.

I dont really know what you are asking...
But at my school AP's are treated just as normal classes, they are not any different than any other class when it comes to your transcript and credits.
And a grade in the class has nothin to do with what score you get on the National Exam. I beleive you are quite confused. If you get an A in the class you can get still a 1 on the nat'l exam, and get a 5 with an F in the class.

That is completely untrue.
3 of my graduated friend have gone onto college a few credits shy of being considered a sophomore. My brothers girlfriend went to Vanderbilt with 32 credits before arriving on campus.
AP's are a wonderful thing. Most do accept them. Getting a 4 or a 5 is not the hardest feat in the world.

Oh I know that the grade and exam are seperate. Though the chances of getting a 5 and failes and the inverse are quite rare.
I'm asking what is normal are your class. It changes your transcripts, but how so? An extra .5 or .05 or completey new grading scale. None of the teachers @ my school agree on how much the bonus is for honors and ap classes. And you see your transcripts, but it doesnt show up till your final 8 semster transcript and the 6 semester transcript you send to colleges to apply.

Colleges go on class rank rather than GPA. Because for instance say one school does have a six on the scale and another school only has a five. The first schools GPA will be inflated, whereas being 1 out of 500 and 1 out of 500 is a better comparrison coupled with similar SAT and AP scores. However as you'll learn one day, when you do take AP exams in May of your senior year, weeks before you graduate and you've been accepted, you honestly don't give a rats behind what you get on the AP exam.

Regular scale: A+=4.333

A-=3.666
B+=3.333 and so on...
AP Scale: A+=4.666
A=4.333
A-=4.000 so it bumps it up one GPA level. Big deal. I did it so college wasn't as much.

I remember I got a 3 on AP Lang when I took it. I did the multiple choice and one essay normal. Then on the second essay, you were supposed to write about how the man was non-physically abusing his spouse, however I flipflopped it and said the woman was doing it to the man. Then for the third essay I wrote about lacrosse and football and drew a picture of kid labelled hopes and dreams with a giant T-Rex armed with rockets and lasers attacking it.
