I'll throw out Trevor Tierney and Matt Russell. I've said it before, but anyone who plays the last quarter and a half of a championship game with a dislocated shoulder... and still was making ridiculous saves until he literally could not lift his arm is phenomenal.

Sal Locasio...I have said it before and will say it again...
In my time (late 80s, 90s, 00s) NO goalie has had success in both indoor and outdoor as a goalie except my man LoCasio...
I mean talk about 2 different styles...box keeper is almost a whole new sport compared to field keeper...

I'd say my top of all time would be Matt Russell, especially after that performance against Boston. I wasn't entirely convinced he'd do well at the MLL level but that proved me wrong. I'm also a huge fan of Tillman and Garrity.

Matt Russell is nastynice. I like Tillman Johnson as well. But I gotta rep My dinosaur goalie coach, Rob Stewart. The man played w/ a woodie, no chest protector, and made All-American in 1969, He played in the North-South game and finished his college carreer with 61% or something, then got shipped off to 'nam to fight.

While Matt Russell is insane in the membrane, my favorite has always been Tillman. I remember the year he won his last championship, the next day at practice everybody wanted to play goalie, and we'd take turns playing goalie during practice. You'd hop in and go "I'm Tillman Johnson! I'm Tillman Johnson!" Woo...good times.

For me, my goalie idols were formed in the late 80's and early to mid 90's, even though they weren't necessarily the very best to ever play, so Quint Kessenich and Scott Bacigalupo were mine. Recently, though, I love to watch tape of Mickey Jarboe and Tillman Johnson.

actually virginian didnt even make the playoffs his senior year (first time a returning national champion hadnt made playoffs since cornell back in the 70s i think)
my favorite would probably be brian dougherty or john "doc" schnieder, say what you want about russel but i havent liked him since he only made 5 saves against princeton in the semis in 04 and got first team all american, and schnieder made 15 against maryland and 17 against virginia and didnt even get hm all american

definitely Sal Locascio and Chris Garrity. they both are often times overlooked for more flashy goalies, but regardless of whether or not they have a "pretty" style or get all the hype, they still get the job done better than anyone else. my pick of the college litter is probably good ol' Doc Schneider, like the ones above, he isn't particularly flashy, but, as just a freshman, he gets his job done like nobody's business.

In box, I would have to go with Dallas Eliuk and Anthony Cosmo. I enjoy watching Eliuk making acrobatic saves night after night. However, my style is more suited towards Anthony Cosmo. Having said that, I also use Cosmo as my equipment reference.
For those that have played goal in both box and field successfully, I would have to say that Sal LoCascio would have to be the best. He has the size, quickness, and mobility all in one.

Also, when I watch my old Cuse championship tapes, I love to watch Rob Mulligan play. He just seems like a cocky little jerk and I love it. My friend played in a club game with him, and he was just laughing out loud while he stuffed people at point-blank. Then he took up a shortie and scored a goal, since he has absolutely ridiculous stick skills.

Russell is a great goalie in and out of the crease i saw him in a clip where on a fast break, he used common sense and knew the 4th offender ( saying cause there was a middie too in the play) would get the ball 'cause it's textbook square formation on the fast break and jumped on the attackmen before he could get a shot, and russell knew he'd get the ball. Also i'm from The Island and Cattrano impresses me too. Don't ever forget Doc

Yes I know that Sal Locasio, Trevor Tierney, and Tillman Johnson are also great goalies but Matt Russel is still growing. He will someday take over starting team USA goalie Trevor Tierney. Matt Russel has great performances for the Bayhawks and was a great goalie for Navy that led them to several Patriot League championships.

Best ever hands down. I had the unenviable task of replacing Sal between the pipes after he graduated from Lindy. True story: Im at camp at Rutgers btween soph. and jr. years and I am approached by legendary Brentwood HS coach Bob Hoppey, and he asks me "What size shoes do you wear?" I reply "10", so he says "Locascio was about an 18, you have some big shoes to fill kid." Boy was he right.

Trevor Tierney part of it is because I grew up watching him, and learning from him. After a Princeton game my dad would take me onto the field because he was really good friends with Coach T after Coach T coached him in High School and College and I would hang out with Trevor while he would teach me a few things and he got me into playing goalie. But I also love his style of play. He's aggressive and isnt afraid to come out for a groundball and run it down the field.

Jesse Schwartzman. I could care less he won a national championship. I attended a Johns Hopkins camp at a local high school and there were three goalies. he stayed late with us gave us one on one attention and was really good about teaching us technique. His technique brought me from all county honorable mention to all state level

john marr. come on, the dude is 68 years old and still plays. he is the second string goalie for the scotland national team, behind matt russell. and he plays quite unusually. up until quite recently his refreshment of choice at halftime was, of course, whiskey. he was even given a gift at the world championships last summer, a hip flask. here is a pic, check out his facial expression, helmet, and pads.

Matt Russel is probabally the best goalie out there. He has the great ability to be a little man in the net. He is arguabaly one of the best goalies of all time.
Matt Russell would definatly be mine. I am playing both attack and goalie, and honestly he got me to step between the pipes. I know him really well and he helped me. But the only problem is that he is a navy seal, and won't be back playing in the mll for 4 years. When he comes back he will definatly start playing again. So we will see what happens.

Schwartzman for sure. Since I started playing, I've always wanted to play goalie like that. But gotta love Matt Russell. I tried to jump on top of an attackman like that, but I didn't have the same luck, haha.

Matt Russel... will someday take over starting team USA goalie Trevor Tierney.
Hate to break the news, but due to ILF rules, since Russell has played for Scotland, he can't play for another national team- including the U.S.- in the future. Still, that doesn't diminish his accomplishments one bit, especially playing hurt in that NCAA final.
But as far as goalie idols go, Russell still has to fall behind John Marr in my book. If, after age 60, Russell is still making half the saves Marr somehow still manages to make, I will gladly retract this statement!
I'm sorry that I never got to see Quinn, Kessenich, or Daye back in their days, but my ultimate idols are certainly still Greg Cattrano & Sal Locasio (for indoor AND outdoor success & longevity). Although I, like Cattrano, am a pretty active & athletic goalie, the best quote ever is from Sal: "Let me make one thing absolutely clear. I'm not an athlete, I'm a goalie."

I always liked Jesse Schwartzman. I only knew Hopkins when I started playing Lacrosse and followed them, and that included Jesse Schwarztman. We also have the same playing style. Big body, lots of body saves, fast hands and not great foot speed but still pulls off the save. And always a gamer, anyone who wins two championships has to be a great player

Since I've never played feild, My Heroes are all Box Goalies, Tops is gotta be Greg Thomas, back in the 70's and all he was like best buddies with John Grant, in the WLL he holds the record for most points for a goalie in a season, mostly through assists, but he did score on a penalty shot. I completely idolize the guy not only cause he has an amazing offensive style of play, but also because after like 50 or more years in the sport, he still has so much stoke to just keep playin. The others are good 'ol Dallas Eliuk, the dudes like wat, 40? and he's gotta be the smallest goalie in the WLL. Considering nowadays everyone has boddom pads, or new gen max lax atleast, and he still uses wat seemed to me like the older style of maxlax lowers, taped down, proves that being a goaltender has nothin to do with size ( Thank God!), and Brandon Atherton, he must have been a third stringer for the Coquitlam Adanacs last year, but his style was so lanky and intense, it just sticks in yer head.

Richie Barnes

Larry Quinn

For me it's:
1. Matt Russell. He takes the cake. We have a lot of things in common, even though we have very different styles. And his quotes and the stories of him are really inspiring.
2. Larry Quinn. Classic.
3. John Marr. 69 or 70 and still playing at the world level? That's defenitley enough to earn my respect.

I didn't want to waste my time looking through the entire thread but I have yet to see Brian Carcaterra (maybe a lot of you guys are young). He was a sick unit. Played for Hopkins and I feel revolutionized the keeper role (By him scoring goals and his style of playing keep). While there was a shot He would almost run to the ball and while saving the shot was already up the field. Very aggressive and passionate about lax. He is my ultimate idol. Even to this day since I'm post collegiate.
