I'm a new lacrosse fan. I don't quite know all of the rules. Is there no such thing as an offensive defensemen in lacrosse? Is it true that the defensemen has to stay behind the center line at all times?

not at all times if a middie stays back the d man can go across the midfield line

Er... isn't that an oxymoron... Offensive Defense
Longpole middie is probably what your looking for. Defensive middie.

If you say "Middie Back" before you go over midfield, a defender can go over as long as he like. I have gone over and actually donea few plays and I left the middie on the defense' side for 10 min.

No way, defense is so much better than LSM.
I always wanted to play offensive LSM, one time we were man down and I brought the ball up and stayed up as we played 5 on 6 waiting for our man to be released. It's really funny to hear the coaches yelling "He's a long pole get the ball from him" as you run around, dodge, pass and catch. ;)

i agree. D is where its at. LSM has its pros but there is nothing better than defense.

I think LSM is one of the worst postitions in the game. I think so, because it would be so hard to pick up a ground ball without getting checked. Also, you cannot shoot half as fast as a short stick, and your accuracy is pretty bad unless you practice all the time. In D, all you do is hit people, and hit people, and hit people. Every now and then you run it up, but you get to hit people.

leaving a middie on the D side is my forte, especially when it gets down to the fourth line. After a save I'll just run it down and sorta forget about my worries as a goalie, but then I have to put up with the middies grips after the game.

Blazer that just shows exactly how little you know about the game. Lsm is one of the hardest positions to play and on a good team it is one of the most important as well. TO be a good long stick middie, you have to be not only fast, but have good defenseive postitioning and checks as well, on top of all that you also have to have a great stick and be a threat on the offensive side of the field. As far as your reference to defense, there is more to d than just hitting, any true lacrosse player knows this.

Mmmm.. I was just about to say somthing to that caliber saints.
Actually Dmen can shoot faster with that long pole as far as I'm concerned. Picking up those ground balls isn't that hard if you practice and accuracy isn't a problem for me. I play defense but I have really good stick skills. I love to run the ball up and juke some attack/middy, thinkin that I don't have any stick skills. And I don't think LSM is as hard as you make it out to be. IMO middies never really dodge on the LSM, they see the 6 foot pole and decide to ditch it off tos omeone else whos got a shorty.

I have seen an over usage of LSMs in the past few years. Why? Many LSMs are either speedy D guys that want the flair of scoring, or they are Mids that maybe don't have all the O-skills, but can play some D just get pushed into the LSM role.
Don't get me wrong...
I think when you get a guy thats talented enough or trains well enough, LSM is a great position. Shots from a pole are harder to save for a keeper...but to be a good LSM, you REALLY have to have a handle on just about everything. You need to be quick like a shortie, good footwork and size, and a good head like D, and some shooting skills. Not many can do it all. But I give big props to those that can.

Snake eyes in reference to what you said about middies not dodgeing on lsm, in college it gets to the point where they dont care if you have a 6 footer or not and in some cases you get the guy that will attack you cuz you have to pole just to make you look stupid becuase they think they can beat you.
