Fill out the poll, what arc do you guys play and what arc do you prefer? Why? Are you a wider goalie and only play a three? Are you average-sized and play a 5? Do you play a 7 step or a no-step?

Discuss.

5 Step arc, my personal fav. Sometimes i do my own arc to cause I can be a rebel. But I feel the 5 step is the easiest for me and gives me the best chance at making the save.

I'm a 5-stepper, I find 7-step makes you make un-needed movements...and every second counts when it's just you and the ball...so I'd rather not spend one stepping

I usually play the 5 arc but sometimes I play my own arc. Five arc is much easier for me.

I try to keep the arc consistent in both box and field (5 step), even though the nets are different in each game.

5 because its the easiest to use (does that make sense?).

Well, like I said, it really depends on your body size. I've seen a goalie who was big enough to pull off the 3 step arc, but he wasn't your average 'hey he's a big kid, lets have him step in there'. I know of some smaller kids who play the seven step because they have to constantly be moving to keep up with the shooter's position. I play a five step (I'm 5'8, 170) and I find that it works out perfectly for me. Seems like a lot of other goalies in here like it too.

I play either a 5 step arc or a flat arc. Depends on where the shooter is.

I usually play a 5 step, but im thinking of switching to a flat arc soon.

i play a no arc or flat ark, im a big guy (6'2'' 200 lbs) so i dont need to cut down angles a whole lot, i also feel it gives me a little bit extra time on up close shots

5 step arc, there is no wasted motion. 7 step arc is too much wasted motion, as for the 3 step, i just cant pull it off.

I try to do a 5 step arc, But it usually turns into a "no arc, cause im a rebel".

i actually dont know what i do. i guess it all depends on the distance of the shooter and what the situation is. i ahve tried to do a 5 step arc in practice but it never works cause i concentrate too much on my arc and always end up letting easy goals in

i usually play my own arc, but my coaches keep trying to make me do the five pointer...the 5 is fine and all, but i've already gotten used to my own, and trying to do it on the field is just one more thing to distract from the ball for me

5-step when the shooter's on the outside, 3 when he's 5-6 yards or closer. 5-step helps cut down on the angle from outside, and 3 helps give a little more time to react, and helps prevent shooters inside from shooting around me. I probably play a 7-step, or something like that as well too. It all depends on the game and circumstances.

I play a flat arc just because i never am unsure about my position like i was when I played a 5-step but if they get close I come out

oye, i couldn do a 3 step if i wanted to. i definitly make up my own arc. trying to keep track of my feet and the ball and everyone else at the same time is exhausting. usually flat, out like a foot, if the shooter is out closer to restraining line i will come out a lil more just so i can see around the goal if it goes wide and i chase it without having to go around the goal.

I play my own arc. Whatever feels comfortable really. As long as my body is in front of the shooter, then that's where I stand. I have been taught the 3 and 5 step. I guess you could say I play a "loose" 5 step.

I'm a 5 steppa'. It feels most comfortable that way and generally works pretty well. How far out do you guys stand because my high school goalie coach wants us to stand about 4-5 feet from the goal line but it doesn't seem right to me. I don't wanna make it seem like I'm intentionally not taking his advice.

^That is pretty far away, for me at least. Stand where it's comfortable... Not much to say, but Goalie is the most preference related position in the game. If you feel your too far, then move back, but IN MY OPINION you should not be too far back, like where you are almost standing in the net. Maybe like 2-3 feet in front.

I play a three when there in close and a five when there not as close if our D is good

I generally either do a flat arc (would that be called a 3?) or a 5-step arc, just because I feel most comfortable with those. I don't really like switching up my arc depending on the ball carrier's distance from the goal. If the shooter is getting in close I'll either take a step out from a flat arc, hold my 5-step or take a step out, or just go after the attackman, eliminating angle. But mostly, I play a 5-step arc.

The 7-step is just too much stepping for me, and I'm only 5' 1". I don't like those half steps you gotta do because it makes me a while to retain balance and if the shooter is moving on a horizontal plane to the goal, that can be a problem. I don't see me being able to work it into my arcs anytime soon cause, but I could see it being invaluable to me because I'm a small guy right now and cutting angles is a huge part of my game.

Who are some goalies that use the 7-step arc, anyways?

I use a very loose version of the five step arc. When I play I really put a lot of things out of my mind (like counting steps in a arc) and just focus on covering as much of the goal as possible for that shooting angle. If that means I have to take a shorter step then so be it. I had a goalie coach that said to me once I don't care about your footwork as long as your making the saves, so do what you want but just stop the ball.

i play a loose five step. in warm ups i do a five step and mark the crease w/ my cleat and then i just use the marks as points to be close to.

I voted for 5 step but it usually matters on the team i play, if they shoot close i normally play the 3 step if they shoot far i use the 5 step.
