View Full Version : What's your opinion of TLF's
Seriously here. Are we doing this thing right? Do you consider TLF's #1 for forums. Maybe you think in the future that could be the case.
Of all the other forums (don't class us with full portal sites that supply news) ..... who do you think the best is at this point?
Are there better lacrosse forums than TLF's?
Don't be afraid of hurting my feeling either. Remember what this site is what everyone here has made it.
Sooooo without further delay.....Can I pat myself on the back or should I hold off on that?

Fantastic site. I wish more was done with the women's lacrosse portion but that will only come with time and more girl members so it is nothing you could do.
I think you've done a great job with truly making it a "members site" and I applaud you for that.

Good
Organization - this site is plenty organized. We have stuff in respected areas and it's easier to find advice or information on a particular subject
Content - it's a lacrosse site, and almost anything lacrosse can be found here. From face-offs to heads to the MLL to defensive tactics to high school lacrosse
Software - the site is REALLY easy to navigate through. You can just go staight to the threads you haven't read, see which ones you've posted in, etc. The vBulletin software is a must for forums.
The People - the people who post here are generally knowlegable people who can help others. There are really no flamers on this board
Those are off the top of my head, there are A LOT of good things about these forums
=============
There aren't really that many BAD things about this forum. One thing that bothers me is how there are too many moderators. Most of the moderators here don't even post here anymore... and two of them got banned?
Also, it would be great to get some more smilies here. The ones we have right now are unique, but sometime's I just can't express how I feel... and some of the smilies here are barely ever used...
the best smily to get would be one that has a guy thinking, and one that has it rolling its eyes... man I would be all over that rolly eye smily if we had one...
--
Overall a very good job with the site. I think the regular posters on here will agree as well. This is probably my most visited website. It's one of my homepages.

Thanks for the advice and input.
The moderators on here now only number 17. I needed mods in the beginning to jump start the forums. The good ones are here and the bad ones are gone. Who is now a mod that doesnt frequent the site?
Far as smilies, I'm up for changing them around. WOuld you be interested in getting the ones members would most likely use? Email me them in .zip format and I'll make it happen.

ive seen other places that are quality, but the sheer number of people who contribute to this forum set it apart from others. theres more of a variety of posts and topics and people post much more often than anywhere else. everytime i return i know there will be more than like one more post to read from last time and there will never be a stretch of any long amount of time where there wont be any new posts. great job, i wish other places could be as good but ya know someone has to be the best.

first and for-most... Mark, you deserve a major round of applause. your very modest about what your doing here, and don't give yourself due credit alot of the time.
The forums general layout: This is very easy to navigate through and generally with much ease. there is a thread here for every topic and they are always located in the correct forum, either by the original posters or by your well trained moderator militia. but after some time threads get pushed back and new ones are made to replace them. (see my thread in suggestions and ideas for more info)
the people here are generally very good people. many of the warring parties that were here when i arrived have seemed to have grown up and became friendlier to each other. there arnt many (if any) flamers/spammers on this board that i could speak of.
your mods. the current staff seem to be great guys (and gals). some of them are a little displaces and don't put much personnality in their posts (when they post), but they seem to stay up with their jobs. they keep the forums clean (i noticed a few threads cleaned up just minutes after the use of profanity) and for the most part are main contributers to conversations. what i noticed is that generally speaking, most of the top 15 or so posters all have modship. not saying at all that you all get rank by posts, but that the most active and dedicated people are awarded. sort of the spider man gift/curse type of thing.
each of these things Mark have come from you. You can say all you want that we are the people who make this forum, but i say you deserve more credit than that. you are obviously just and fair, as well as understanding how teens act, since you have managed to keep this forum clean. you may play the mod card again, but who gave the mods their assignments and enforces the guidlines you set on them as well as other members. i mean, the lost mods here would still be present if this was the Brine boards or anywhere else, and for that you deserve a pat on the back.
thnx everyone for makin this place special, and especially you Mark.

mark this site is great... i remember when i first showed up here, it was a little dead with the few number of members we had, but you've done an unbelievable job of building it up. it's the first forum where there is little to no flaming and it's all just helpful knowledgable folks. great job.
the smilies are my only complaint and it looks like you're gettin that taken care of.

Overall best site for sure, but many things could be learned from others. TLF overalll has everything and anything you could want. Literally any subject of lacrosse can be found. There are two lax sites that have better specific areas that are better then TLF. Laxpower members have a rediculous knowledge of the college game, and the NLL boards know the NLL inside and out. Other then that TLF leads any other forum with flying colors. A large reason are the mods and members.

Lots of topics and i tell my team to check this place out as well.

actually mark regarding the smilies: ther's a lot you coudl put and I only gave you a few cause I thought that you dont want too many.
Also I forgot to mention that after I discovered this site I dont go to any other lacrosse site anymore. I used to search for them all the time, but now that I found this one there's really no reason to go to others.

I've really enjoyed coming to this site and interacting and being a mod and I agree, most of that is due to you, Mark. The layout of the boards makes it very very easy to visit and surf around and talk in which threads I want and read other ones and not get lost about which I"ve been in and so forth. In terms of being a mod, the few times I've ever had to do anything, you've always backed me up and you treat all the members fairly. The ones that couldn't handle the responsibilty of following certain guidelines aren't really needed because the tone of all the forums is respectful conversation. Every time I get online, I check my email first, then I come right to this forum, without fail that is the order in which I proceed and I see no reason that is going to change, this place just gets better and more fun, the more members and threads we get.

I agree with JMP...
NLL board members know all about BOX
Laxpower seem to be older and much wiser guys who dont talk about equipment, significant others, etc...
This is THE site for a good mix of young and old, male and female, and fun and informative...just need to watch that the fun doesn't totally take over and you get like the old inside lacrosse and brine boards that was just trash talk and garbage...
I like our little community and I think newbies are quickly assimilated to our Karma shall we say...
as far as layout/etc...this is very easy to use...excellent features...I think it is excellent...

Yeah, this site is very good. Best forum out there. Don't worry about trash talkers. We had one about a month ago, and we drove him out quickly.

i remember ol ALA and chowmein was like the only girl thier
anyway about TLF
Great site, no flamers here is really a good thing for newcomers.
I posted here when I first started goal and this has been the biggest resource for me, almost every thread got some response and FAST so i got info that i needed, now i dont ask me team anymore i just post any questions here so it helped in that sense.
One suggestion. The organization of this board is the best ive seen, but MAYBE think about reducing the number of forums.
I was kinda intimidated by the number of forums thier where when i first started posting. just a thought, it might be annoying for people with dialup
Great job
TLF has become one of my top 3 favorite lax sites. It's easy to navigate and post. I appreciate the other little touches like the avatars, PM-ing and profile customization, the ability to post photos...
WestSide brought up something I agree with. There are too many forum categories. The number should be cut down by at least 1/4. If you cruise the Women's Forum, you'll see there's really no need for 5 sub-forums. It should just be a general forum by itself. The Women's Open isn't any different from the General Open Forum.
I don't see anything in Product Reviews that wouldn't fit in Stick Tech or Lax Gear. It has the same type of threads.
The Aspects section is overboard. Tactics, Attack, Mid, Def, and Goalie should be combined into two forums, Offense and Defense. If I'm reading a thread about executing an over-the-head check, why wouldn't a thread about man-down zone defense fit in the same category or interest the same readers?
One of the problems with too many forums and topics is that it over-divides the threads which leads to fewer views of the threads, fewer posts and less activity. Not everyone uses the Today's Active Threads option.
I would like to see more moderating by the moderators. Everyday there is a post in General about 'What do you think about this head/shaft/glove?' that should go in Stick Tech or Gear. I would like to see moderators redirecting threads to the appropriate categories. Even this thread should go under Suggestions & Ideas shouldn't it?
I would like to see moderation of threads that go too far off topic. A thread about lax digresses into a series a posts of everyone's favorite Simpsons quotes. Or even worse, members end up posting personal replies to each other that would be better off PM-ed, chat roomed, or e-mailed. These posts should be outright deleted as they usually have nothing to do with lax or anyone else on TLF and waste bandwidth. This also applies to "me too" type posts. And what's up with the preoccupation so many members have with their post count?
All in all, thanks for hosting a great forum.

I think the whole thing with going off topic is fine IMO. When you have a normal conversation it always goes off topic, a person can always bring it back on topic and everything will be back to normal.
Some things can be said on PM but then I'd rather say stuff out in the public so everybody can see what I said and they can comment on it if they feel like they can add to it.
This is a forum and we should keep it organized as far as topics go but the topics also have to run like a normal face to face conversation for it to be sucessfull.

i think that TLF has a lot of good parts, but i have to say that the most outstanding part is the organization. The whole site is well kept, and there are many rules that help get rid of all the junk that people post. That is a major plus by you mark. I also got to review the jimalax which was an awesome experience, the mesh i still use on my main stick. I wish i could do more to contribute like being a forum moderator but whatevers. I love this place!!!

I'll read all the above later, right now I gotta say:
as a person new to this sport, I am learning the game, the sport, the lingo, the culture, the national scene...all rolled into one. This site is excellent.
I am referring everybody in our new local program, especially the teenage guys, to this site. As the program director who is trying to expose new players to the sport, this site is a tool to enable me to immmerse the new player in the sport, and lock 'em into playing with us for keeps.
Keep up the great work!
Oh, yeah, I need a smiley for blind lacrosse! :bye:

We appreciate the complimently sincerely, but we gotta close this thread. This is from the very beginning of when TLF started...if anyone else needs to comment on how TLF is doing, we have a much more updated thread in the suggestions/announcement forum.
