Throat Guard...Legal or Illegal?

Last year I made a throat guard in tech class. It was made out of 1/8" lexan sheet which was bent to cover the entire neck area. Would this have been legal or illegal? The refs did not call anything on me and they players thought it was funny. I also used this in box and they said I could use it because it was safer than the ones they have. I will post some pics if needed.

As far as I can tell it would be legal, similar to the white plastic guards that goalies wear now. I also don't see where the rules would prevent a non-goalie from wearing one as well.

looks pretty boxy/funny but I'm sure you could play with that
