Hello all keepers, and welcome to the Goalie Gear Question Megathread.
Any and all questions regarding gear and gear preference are to be posted in this thread. Any threads created for the purpose of asking about gear will be merged with this one.
Thanks!

This is my first year playing lacrosse as a goalie and I'm sick of the gloves the school gave me. They aren't even goalie gloves they're field. So I want to know what you guys would suggest for new ones.

Whatever feels comfortable. I love my Glads. However, some people hate them. It seems like the top of the line gloves are Superfreaks, Insanities, Defts, Gladiators, and Ipros. Find a store near you and try some out.

Brine x-factor gel goalie's are nice too, that's what I play with, but I cut off the big pad around the thumb of the glove b/c it's a pain in the butt, and I haven't had any problems taking shots off the hands. But, like SeanO said, it's about preference. Find some gloves, try them on and hold a shaft/cradle with it in the store a little, see which feels the best.

Alright kids. I'm not a big fan of preference threads, or "what should I buy/what do you recommend?" threads... but I too was once a newbie, and once and a while have to replace some stuff (ahem... like how I'm currently putting off buying new gloves that actually fit..).
Alas, I've put this together. Gear/Stick question/recommendation request megathread. If you have any questions or a need for recommendations/preferences of others, post them here. Not in a new thread. I'll just merge the new thread to this one, and then slap you with an alert or warning for not knowing to search (or read, since this is stickied).
So, off. Play, post, and be merry~

IVe played with Insanity, X factor, Superfreak and i2 goalies, and I would say Superfreaks take the cake. Pretty flexible and very tight fitting, with the second best thumb protection from those four. Iggie Pro Amps are the ledgends though, go with those if you can find a pair.
Whats the difference between regular gloves and goalie gloves? I just use regular gloves and they work fine

when i play goalie i just use regular vector gloves which are great. I never took shots in the hands

the gladiator goalie gloves have an irritating flaw, in the finger protection is lacking. every time i get hit in the fingers i feel like my fingers are broken. do the superfreaks have this problem? or do all goalie gloves? because i will deal with it if they all do.

I currently own a pair of Goalie I2s, and I must say they're very flexible. The protection may be a bit lacking, cause I still fractured my thumb on a shot.

Pretty much any glove is like that, unless it has a super-reinforced backhand, like Superstars. You can also customize your gloves to have more protection, thats what I did to my [once field] Supercrosses. Heck, the guy I traded my Insanity goalies to made them field versions.

I love these gloves. That is what I have. I have not yet fractured my thumb, but it has bruised. These gloves still are great and you can probably get them pretty cheap now.

goalie gloves are thicker for better protection

The only "thicker" goalie gloves I know of are the Superstars and RPMs/Monsoons(tougher backhand than field versions, and wrist wings respectivly)
The difference between field and goalie gloves is just more protection on the thumb.

less padding the better

Honestly, any kind of gloves will work, but I recommend the STX i2's. they have extra padding in the thumb which is great for the kind of goalie that likes to come out of the net a lot. i usually don't but it also can help with really hard shots like at varsity and college level

i'm just tossing something out,,,,i have defts with the goalie thumb and i love them, to me they feel like normal field gloves...i was at the goalie school in early july, and a kid on my team put pvc around the thumb and taped it up, and i tried it, it feels wierd at first, but you don't feel thumb shots...just a suggestion

Maybe it's just me, but tape really stiffens up your thumb so you can't move it as well. About your chances of living, well...no comment

love my defts, just tape up the thumb for grip and im good to go. a good idea is also the use of regular field gloves. can save u a little bit of money and u can just put somethin around the outside of the thumb if you want and theyre just as good as goalie gloves. when i dont use my defts, my da vinci gloves are a good second.

alright ive got a question about scoops. im using an old stx goalmaster since i dont play goalie all that much however, i absolutely hate the way the scoop is shaped. does anyone know of a way to possibly shape the scoop, like by heating it or should i just get myself a new head? i dont mind the shape of the head otherwise its just the scoop.
EHSLAX12
08-26-2006, 01:53 PM
there isa way that can work. tie a lace through the top sidewall holes and pull tight and knot when the scoop is more curved. then boil just the top and it should curve a bit
EHSLAX12
08-26-2006, 01:55 PM
i did it wit a triton and it worked, it now has a scoop like the torque, but a goalie head might be a little more difficult to do, it wont shape as much but should still take a curvy shape.

I have a pair of JHU goalie Ipro gloves and there great! I took a crank to the hand first day i got them, and I didnt feel anything. Confisence in gear is critical so spend the extra dollar and get whats right!
thedrekavac
09-28-2006, 06:44 PM
i couldnt agree more "confidence is key mahn" another big thing is dress to match. In a 2 second fight the intimidator always wins. intimidation can put a 90mph shot right into your stick. Pay the extra dollar, get the gloves, make the saves, you dont want to end up with a cast on your hand because you tore a ligament first game and now its the third game and you cant fit into your gloves so you cut a hole for the cast and expose the thumb, which then gets hit again sending you to hostipital---- its not fun trust me all because i was using field gloves which gave me better thumb control, now i cant even tap my thumb without it hurting. never mind field gloves- i gotta use hockey gloves.

I need advice. I need to buy a carbon composite shaft. What are my options? The shaft must be goalie length, and I do not want to buy a dpole and cut it down. I know harrow and STX contender. Any others?

gloves are all about comfort. what ever feels comfortable on your hand. your size is also figured out my comfort. some people light tight gloves, some like loose.

wat is the difference between goalie gloves and field gloves ive heard that goalie gloves have reinforced thumbs but im not sure if that is correct
hcDevils391
12-29-2006, 11:31 AM
yes goalie gloves have reinforced thumbs, it is usally around the tip of the thumb and a little over it, not any extra padding that i can tell on the rest of the hand but gloves differ

its just an added protection to the thumb for shots that might hit your thumb.

hey for me gloves dont really matter i played with goalie and field gloves but i like field however after a a broken thumb i moved tword the shoguns from stx due to the small thumb guard that protects me enogh and my view is the better the shooter the less pads you need cuz if they hit you they suck

Hey man I've used a Goalmaster, an Abyss, a few Nemis and an Eclipse. Before this season I swore by my nemis, then my cousin gave me his old eclipse from when he played goal in High School. I loved it and have been using it ever since. Im not trying to turn this into a nemi vs eclipse thread. eclipse is maybe an ounce lighter but not as stiff. By looking at it I think it has a larger save area. Personally i would say go with the eclipse. It's cheaper by the way.

As a starting Goalie, would I be getting too far ahead of myself by picking up a Nemesis? I've only been in the crease for a few months with my Snatch(name makes me laugh), but I have the opportunity to pick up a Nemi for pretty cheap. I guess what I'm asking is, would the head be too advanced for me?
EndlesFimbulvet

Nonsense. Last year the freshman goalie bought himself (or rather, pleaded mommy to buy it for him) a Nemesis, and he sucks bawls.
Nemesi are great heads, if you can get one cheap, dont hesitate.

One more question. Since I'm pretty new in net, I've been borrowing gear for use. I'm looking at buying my own by the beginning of summer, and I need to know if the gear I'm looking at is any good. The ones where there's more than one, by the way, I'd like to know which is best. So here goes.
Chest Protector: Warrior MPG Chest Protector, Warrior MPG Chest Protector 2.0, Brine Hyper, or Gait Sentinel
Gloves: Hypno Goalies or I2 Goalies
Stick: Probably just gonna stick with my Snatch until it starts to fall apart(hahaha). Thinking about a new shaft tho, like a Platinum.
Throat Protector: Will that 25-30 buck screw-on one fit on my CLH2?

Heres what I can tell you. Ive heard the MPG CP doesnt cover all of your stomach area so you might not like that. I use a Brine Supercrosse and I love it. You can take so many parts off it so you can get it just the way you like it with the protection you want where you want it.
The Hypnos will work for gloves. You might want to get something like Defts or Shoguns (what I use). The shoguns have a massive thumb protector, ive never hurt my thumb in them.
For your stick I would stay with what you have since you already have it. No sense buying another one if you have one that works fine.
I think the Cascade throat protector will fit any Cascade helmet so that will work.
Those are just my opinions on the gear I have used. Once you start playing and practicing regularly you will know what you need in gear.

I know you said goalie length, but I use a Warrior Nemesis with a Harrow attack shaft (the one that doesnt curve in at the top) and it works well so I'm sure that a harrow goalie would work just as well
I've been using an attack shaft since I started playing goalie. I learned this from when I used one of the Varisty team's goalie's stick a while ago. I loved it (it was a Warrior Nemesis on a STX AXE Attack.) I've thought about it but I didn't really care because i liked it but now it's kidan making me curious. I'm currently using a Warrior Nemesis on a harrow attack shaft ( I had a attack warrior kryptolyte but my friend broke it at practice so I rencently got the harrow and it's not the kind that curves in) and it seems to be working fine for me, it feels a very little bit heavier than some goalie sticks but i'm just wondering if there are any flaws to using an attack shaft over a goalie shaft. Thanks

Try using a middie shaft. I like it because when I come out of the cage it's a shorter stick, as well as when I'm in the cage it gives me the ability to swing the stick easier.

I think Goalie Shafts are around 20 some - 30 some inches. There is no requirement on length of a goalie shaft.

Take a couple of hard shots to the thumb and you'll understand the need for goalie gloves. I, for one, no longer need to watch any more fingernails bend backwards, turn blue and fall off, and the goalie thumbs don't in any way affect stick handling for me. I see no reason not to use them.

im looking for a new chest pad, and so far its between the Brine Eraser, and the Warrior Players Club 6.0, besides the obvious price differance, the Warrior seems like it would be more protection, and doesnt look as bulky as the Eraser. anybody have any suggestions or other pads I should look at?

UNO!
I'd go with Brines or STXs, personally--more durable, palms/stitching won't rip as fast...
When I step in the net, I STILL use the Ignitors I got for christmas 5 or 6 years ago--they still stand up...
but that's just me...

are you joking? no seriously are you? I have used the PC 6.0s for a whole season, the biggest piece of crap i have ever bought. Go with erasers
i am 5'10'' and 140 pounds I ordered a medium and tightened them as far as they go and they are still bulky!
6.0's Pros/Cons
Pros
-Very protective, the most protective CP on the market, BUT most of the protection isn't needed... all the stuff on the shoulders and arms isn't needed, i took all that stuff off and its still bulky as garbage
(cons will be in next post, i can't post it, my computer keeps freezing because theres to much text to load so just give me a sec lol)
EDIT okay cons:
Cons:
-heavy, after awhile, these start to bog you down, i am no noodle arms, and i am not weak, these are just heavy...
-Not flexible, these don't form to your body, you have a better chance of strapping a wood board to your chest and trying to have that form to your body... these suck
-Protection that is un-needed, all the stuff on the arms and shoulders is un-needed, never got hit there, never will. it only slows you down even more
-these things just to much money go with the erasers
-no mobility, makes your clears/passes alot shorter, and harder to make those weird bouncing saves!
as you can see, go with the Brine erasers. those are alot better with ALOT more movement, and umm.... what makes you think the 6.0s are more movable? lol to much crap on them, and if you do get these, tell me so i can laugh at you!
Search for Reviews on the Brine eraser CP there should be like 3 reviews or so and they are very good and i agree, i have the eraser, only had them for like 2 weeks or so. ALOT more mobility, and the protection is fine, it covers the spots taht need to be covered and covers them well.

u can custom order one off of warriorlacrosse.com
does anyone know the price it doesnt say
Thats the biggest issue. You cant order them from Warrior.
You have to order them from a Warrior retailer, and most of them dont carry the goalie version Macs. In fact, there was a disscussion on this a little while back, and I'm pretty sure you have to do an entire team order to get goalie Macs.
Correct me if im wrong.

I'd go with the Eraser if its between the two of them.
But remember, just because it has the biggest price tag on it, doesnt make it the best! I've been using a Gait Sentinal CP for 2 years it works great. It's low profile for great mobility, and the protection itsnt bad. It even looks pretty cool, and it costs under $60.

I have the eraser and it is pretty good. i have not used the 6.0, or any of the other ones, so i probably cant compare as well. but the eraser has a ton of mobility and is very easy to move around. the only problem i have is that there is a little too much room at the top of the CP near my neck. when i tighten it a lot it is a little better, but i got a neck guard that hangs down real low, so it isnt a big problem.
overall the eraser is really good

Well, after finishing my first season 16-2 of laxvas the goalie, I've decided to pursue a career in goalie. I was using borrowed equipment from the team, so I actually have no goalie gear. I need help on equipment.
For head/shaft, I was thinking Eclipse/803.
What is the difference between regular gloves and goalie gloves? Can I use regular gloves frequently as a goalie?
I need a strong, flexible, but not too outrageously priced chest protector.
What kind of arm guards should I get (I was thinking K18's.)
If you have any other suggestions, pray tell! I need all the help I can get.
Btw don't make this preference, but rather objective insight!

Arm guards get in the way, I dont know goalies that wear them.
Goalie glove just have more padding on the thumb.
look around for an older CP, such as brine spartan core.

you shouldn’t use arm guards they slow your movement down a lot and i like the MLL Goalie Guard 5.5 http://www.lax.com/shop/item.phtml?page=product_5483_front.phtml

Sentinal on the 803 or kryptolyte is cheap and very light stick.
Don't get arm pads
Chest pad - aegis, its only 40 dollars and very comfortable
Always use Goalie Gloves. I have been hit in the thumb a few times and it hurts even with the big thumbs.

i would also suggest playing with someone's nemesis.
my 2 sticks are:
nemesis / db803 (on it's way, on an alloy 2000 atm LOL)
nemesis / klyte (goalie)
and working on finding another:
nemesis / wonderboy xcel
also you'd be dumb not to get goalie gloves, or at least search and find the thread that shows you how to convert them using PVC or whatever

the stuff i use now is:
Nemesis on a Kpro-very light and i just like the nemesis more then eclipse... but thats IMO
Brine eraser CP--go with those, those are the best, i have also seen the Mll 5.5's, those seem pretty good to, but the price is somewhat steep on those, get the erasers, they are only $85
your GONNA want goalie gloves, man i wish they still sold the gladiator ones, but hmm... if i were you get the superfreaks, i used to have those untill i got custom mac daddy goalie gloves and they are just about the same, hands need the most protection because if you get hit in the thumb and YOU ARE NOT wearing goalie gloves, you break your thumb.
Basically goalie gloves have extra padding on the thumb (which they have a metal bar wraped around your thumbs so the ball WILL NOt break them) and they have some extra padding on the back hand part, well at least mine do, all goalie gloves have the thumb part.
Get a Cascade throat gaurd, the ones that the college goalies use, although they are somewhat expensive and you have to drill holes, they are well worth it and will last you forever.

cascade throat guards do not last forever, but i do recommend them. i had one split clean off my helmet this year. 90mph shot i think...as for gloves, they're pricy, but stick w/ the superfreak goalie, comfy, grippy, and invincible. stick i would recommend a nemesis for the head because the pocket is more consistant. eclipse was my first but it cracked multiple times due to the "acclaimed" open sidewall design. helmet of choice would be a cpx-pro titanium...cage wont dent. yuor chest protector is important. stay away from 2 peices like the chopper. i comfortable one is necessary. and for your shaft problem go for klyte pro. P.S. goalie gloves versus regular gloves is not a huge difference. i have broken thumbs in both, its jus part of the position.

I'm thinking about getting the Eraser CP, but the thing is everyone says it sizes big and I'm 5' (I'm young lol). Would a really tightened small fit me? Or should I just go for a whole different CP? For me 6.0s are out of the question, they are way too pricy and like everyone said, limit mobility. Also thinking about getting an STX Exo or something, not that many decent CPs come in small.
So anyways, would a small Eraser fit me?

Didn't AM17 break his finger(s) twice in Deft goalies?
Anyways, I recommend the Superfreaks, I rock them. They're very protective and moveable, but some of the stitching will come out fast (It won't affect the glove's performance, at least for me so far). They're very nice though. I can't speak for the other gloves, as I have never used them, but I can tell you that Superfreaks are a good way to go.

The deft's goalie thumb is VERY small. I don't think it will protect you at all. I have them, but luckily i haven't got hit on my thumb yet. The cuffs on my defts ripped about 2 weeks after i got it. Either get Cascade or Brine.
If you have an oval shaped head [like me] then get a Cpro, but if your head is more round then get a CPX. I haven't tried on any of the Brine helmets yet.
Does your school have team helmets?? If so, then match what the other players have.

I use a Triumph and I find it works great. I have taken a few shots to the head and there was no ringing at all. And all those shots were from box lacrosse. The only thing is that there is no specific throat guard for it. I use the triad throat guard. This helmet may not fit you if you have a big. They tend to run small. I think the max size is 22" but do not qoute me on that.
A lot of people on the site recommend Cascade. Check out some reviews on here also to compare different helmets.

Cascades are alright, they suck when you first get them and half to break them in. They don't offer a lot of comfort. I use a Viking, its heavy, but you don't feel anything. I tried on a Triumph at laxworld, and wow, I was very impressed, with that 360 dial they have on that thing, fit like no other helmet.

i recommend the nemesis over the eclipse. only because the narrower base of the head on the nemi makes it easier to break in a good pocket. the eclipse is a fine head as well but in 4 years i have cracked 2 of them due to the smaller sidewall piecing. nemesis also offers the open sidewall but has sturdier walling. as for a shaft go klyte all the way. Buy it thru the company that way if u do any harm to it you can send it back for a new one. but i doubt you'll hurt it

I use the Eclipse on a Triax 7000 handle but that just seems to be my combination. And as for breaking in a pocket it shouldn't take any longer with an eclipse than a nemi.
juskellaxin
06-08-2007, 10:44 PM
its not about length of time, its about how easy it is to work a pocket to just how you like it. a narrow and deep pocket (easily acheived w/ a nemi) is ideal for mechanized passing capabilities

ehh.. im not a fan of it, i like the Nemesis, i have 2 nemesis's, one on a Kpro, and one on a Titan Classic. the Nemesis and Kpro is a very light and great goalie stick, i reccomend that one over the eclipse.
IMO, the eclipse is to flexible and wobbly. whereas the nemesis is sturdy and not as flexible. Plus yet my opinion again, its easier to get a good pocket on it, but thats just my personal opinion. i have tried the ecllipse and didn't like it too much.
You should read more about both heads, don't let one person including myself influence you to much. and remember, they both have there ups and downs, i just think the nemesis has better things to offer then the eclipse.

I've used one before, definatly not a ton of padding, but its very mobile. Theres padding on the back, rib pads and what not too, if you want more mobility and are willing to sacrifice protection, find an old youth sized chest protector. Rhinoskin would be a good option if it wasnt 80+ clams.

Definatly learn to do it yourself, Lax Unlimited does horrible jobs, especially with goalie stringing. There are tutorials in the Stick Doctor's Lounge for stringing goalie heads.
If you can string it yourself, have a teammate do it for you. Anything is better than LU's 35$ for lousy stringing.

Does anyone have any of the warrior cp's with the plastic shoulders (PC, MLL 5.0, MPG 5.5)? I got the MLL 5.0 mad cheap, but now I'm starting to wonder if its worth it. The neck guard gets in the way, which is my biggest complaint. My cpro gets stuck on it when I look down. Anybody else have that problem?
I'm gonna stick it out though, what it lacks in mobility it makes up for in protection.

you can get a good pocket in one easily. However, because of the shape, you won't get a fantastic channel, but it's unnecessary really; the ball will still go where you want it too. all these ridiculous channels you see on here are really just for aesthetics. so, back to the question, the channel won't be pretty in an eraser, but it will do it's job well enough and it's still a great head.

I've got a big hand. In hockey I would wear about a 14 or 14.5 inch glove (when I played out). Are there any lacrosse goalie gloves that run in a bigger 13 inch? I tried some regular Warrior 13s on and they seemed about right, bigger than Brine.

I'm 6ft 160lbs, what size eraser cp should I get. I'm pretty skinny too. I was thinking a medium because that's what size brine field shoulder pads I wear.

you just gotta go over to a store and try it on....unless someone on here knows off the top of their head then you gotta go do it yourself.

I know this thread is for asking about buying goalie gear but I can't find anywhere else to ask this question about selling a piece of gear
How much you think I could sell a Used Medium Gladiator CP?
It has a small tear on the front but does not effect the effectiveness of the CP

Find some Gaits- LAST year's models (Insanity or Chaos). They're cut big.
The Mutants aren't so big & I don't think the Identity gloves coming out are very big. Otherwise, I don't know of any XL models in the other lines.

ummm... I don't think you would want to where rhinoskins for goalie. They don't go far enough down on your stomach, plus, I don't think they are thick enough to stop a shot/keep you protected.

Does anyone have the mpg goalie pants? How do the sizes run? I'll probably need a small or x-small, I have a 29" waist and am 5'2". Anybody have any knowledge of the sizing on them? These aren't sold at any local stores, so I can't really try any on.

I have a simple question. Do you have to where elbow pads when your a goalie? Because i've play goalie for a year and wore them just to be safe but now they get in my way and i can't throw as far as befor. I guess i wore them because i was a running goalie. A goalie who ran the ball at what ever chance i had.

anybody tried or heard anything about the new reebok pads?
http://www.lacrossemonkey.com/rbk-lacrosse-goalie-protector-9k.html
or the new warrior ODB?

The warrior ODB is supposed to be very good for the price. My coach has one, although I personally haven't used it, he said its legit, and it works well.
And if your gonna get one, get it on lax.com because lacrossemonkey.com has some outragously high prices.
I have seen the rebok, but never used, only tried it on at my local lax shop. Its alright... I still prefer my Brine Eraser CP. Not much to say about it, it's less bulky then the warrior PC 6.0 or 7.0 or whatever it is now. But not as slim and light as the Brine Eraser CP

on the cascade pro7, do you have to drill holes in it like on the cpro for the throat guard? or are the slits on the side for a throat guard?
