What is with the new name? I know they have had it for like a couple weeks now but I mean common. The Syracuse Orangemen has like a nice ring to it. That is kinda over the top or whatever as far as like women's rights go. Oh well, Syracuse Orange sounds weird, liked Syracuse Orangemen better.
:wtf

There was a past post about this somewhere, They are calling themselves just "the orange" now so that there is more unity and such.

i hate the orange. It was orangemen, it's a name, GET OVER IT! personally i'm pissed at mothers against drunk driving (madd) cause i'm madd at drunks but im not a mother. They should change it to padd. People against drunk drivers, or people against dumn ditzes (the women in madd)

There are many organizations that have people advising you against drunk drivers, MADD is just one of the more popular ones. And since it was originally started by mothers you don't really need to change the name because I think they are more worried about helping people then what they're called. But there is only one Syracuse, so its being called the Orangemen could be viewed as unfair because it is indeed a school for all genders. And besides "The Orange" sound pretty cool if you ask me.

orangewomen does suck, but still, orangemen has some nice history and stuff. orangelady? orangegal? guess they all suck. I'm also pissed cause recently our school was changed from the chiefs to the patriots cause american indians may be offended. But it was indians who complained. It was a mother! for 50 years no indians cared, but she just had to change it.

Are you really that arrogant? It makes no difference what so ever.

It doesn't really make a diffrence at all. Lets be honest this whole thing is just petty, and not really that important. The changing of the name really makes not diffrence at all. I think it was more for publicity than anything else.

ok. if their team were called the orangewomen and they chnaged it to the orange would you be argueing or agreeing to it? that's what i thought. its changed. and that's final. its like when you choose the losing superbowl champion. tough loss, now get over it.

it is politically uncorrect cause you cant have an orange person techinically its a slang term for native american
apmlax85
06-03-2004, 09:57 AM
Thats "Red"man bud, not orangeman, and the syracuse name had nothing to do with native americans in the first place.

is that the reason they changed it? b/c it says "man"? geez womanists will never give anything a rest. thats like 10 years ago, when there were a bunch of feminists trying to change the spelling of women to womyn, b/c it had the word "man" in it.
dont get me wrong, im not trying to start some battle here with you girls. thats just a stupid reason to change it, if i were used to saying orange women and they changed it to orange, id still be a little discruntled. orangemen just seemed to sound better and go smoother when said. just saying "the orange approach the field", it just sounds like something is missing.

I think they should eliminate all secondary colors. How cool would it be to have all orange pads. Like no gray or black or silver or nothing. Just orange. Oh man, that would look so funy. And cool.

Is "Midshipmen" the official nickname (is "official nickname" an oxymoron?) for Navy? Hobart can stay "Statesmen" quite easily because Hobart is an all-men's school.
My understanding is that non-sexist language wasn't the ultimate reason for SU's name change, although it's correct that no way were the women's teams going to stand for being called orangemen. The Athletic Department wanted one name for men's and women's teams and hence "Orange"
HdGLaxWarrior

I think it's there official name, because that's what they've always been...
they should keep him, he is kind of an orange. But o well. How did they get the name orangemen in the first place? This is an old thread, so I'm surprised no one has clarified this yet. Stonewall35 was close. The Orangemen, or Orange Order, was/is a Protestant Organization started by William of Orange in Ireland in 1795. You can read more about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orangemen
The change from Orangemen to Orange has nothing to do w/ PC-ness. SU & Nike decided that Orange would be more marketable. Otto the Orange will be retained.
Break it down Otto!

Thats clearly a tomato. Good effort though. You're right, but I couldn't resist. Perhaps it's one of Otto's relatives. Tom-Otto. It was better than any of the Otto the Orange photos I found, and they bear more than a passing resemblence.
