Rhinoskin pads are legal.

They become illegal (like any other shoulder pad) if you modify them and take off the shoulder caps.

no, thats not true. Since the caps are held on by velcro, and not sewn on, it would not be illegal to play without the caps. juts like its not illegal to remove the bicep pads on SP.

they are attahced there for a specific reason...rhino skin is used by some players as a second sourse of padding..so they wear the rhino under their usual shoulder pads...having a shoulder pad on the rhino wouldn't allow the SP to fit. the only time the caps should be taken off is if the player intends to wear a regular SP above the rhino

no, you can still wear just the rhinoskin without the caps, they still have padding under where the shoulder caps were, the shoulder caps are just for extra protection

If you are too lazy its a Rhinoskin thread asking if they are still legal in High School play [NFHS Rules] If you remove the shoulder cap.

LaxRef says-

No. That is considered altering the shoulder pads. 1:00 NR penalty if you get caught.

Even if they have velcro, the argument that that's so you can take them off if you want to doesn't fly. I mean, the face mask on your helmet has screws, but that doesn't mean you can take the face mask off and play without it.

More arguements were made, but you cannot alter your pads. If your pads come without the shoulder cap then they are legal, if you alter your pads in anyway then it is illegal.

Now the question arises if you are going caught without the shoulder caps... Probably not.

Really though, I have never looked under the jersey to see if a player has shoulder pads on. Sometimes after a stick check i may grab the person on the shoulder when handing them back their stick and make casual conversation like "Thats a nice stick ya got there" just to see if their shoulders are padded, but if i feel padding then i won't press the issue.

And usually unless it is requested ref's don't check shoulder pads at a quarterly stick check.

But I'm in 7th and 8th grade level. Are they required at this level?

At that age you should be using all of your safety equipment properly. All it takes is a stray check to hit a growth plate somewhere and you'll end up with one arm longer than the other.

haha for sure. its way different trying to blow by someone whos 4 years older than you.

and laxref- I know its illegal but if theres a pad under the cap is it still illegal? because if you do a shoulder pad check they should still have pads covering the shoulder
