The starter for Navy wasn't looking too hot either. Pfeifer played a pretty good game at the end

there back-up goalie (forget the name something that started with an "f") hadn't played an entire minute the whole season. He was a freshie too. You gotta feel bad for him though, but if you suck you shouldn't be playing. But yah Pfifer did do really well in goal

P.S. Lol, sorry 'bout the score

Did you see why Russell came out? He dislocated his freaking shoulder, they popped it back in on the sideline. And then he still watched the rest of the game. I admit that that hurt Navy but they had some chances to win in the last 8 minutes. I don't knwo why DiNola didn't go in and play goal, at least he's had previous experience.

yea...it has to sux to be russell, playing in the championship game, dislocating your shoulder towards the end, backup isnt that great, forced to watch them lose, then at 4am deported for airbourne training on a navy ship...that sux

DiNola probably hasn't practiced as goalie since he got pulled, he's been training as a longstick middie...

I hope this gives Mikey (powell) a reason to keep playing and not go into a music career. He's got so much talent and could do a lot for the MLL.

aside from the fact that navy got screwed with their golies (i didnt care i was rooting for cuse) that was a great game. the fact that the lead was never more than 2 goals and it wasnt always one team that was up top and the other playing catchup. i tried taping it and almost cried when it didnt work *tear*

yea that was a sick game. but the goalie situation definately messed up navy's game. i think all navy's confidence left with their goalie. matt russel is a pretty sick goalie, but he got his starting spot because of the confidence and motivation he brings to the team. when he got hurt, it hurt the team as well.

Am I the only one who watched that game??? The back up goalie did no worse than the starter. Navy's goalie was riddled and the back up didn't let a ton of goals go through. What, 2 or 3 total? Cuse picked up their play at the end of the game and Russell was getting tagged. No matter, Cuse wins.

For all of you blaming the back up, think about how he would have been if ONCE during the season the coach would have put him in when the team was up 4-5+ goals. The kid went into a hard position, no warm up, and nerves stacked on nerves. IMHO, he did great.

Back up let two goals by

Russel would have definatly stopped teh first one, the second one was way too hard and mike would have scored that one anyways, plus it's demoralizing for a team when their starting goalie goes out in teh championship game

Actually you couldnt tell what russel wouldve stopped today, I mean I was cheering for navy but he had a HORRIBLE game he couldnt stop anything and you know what he lucked out really well when they called that one goal in the crease and that second goal where the defender had to run in. Didnt you see the backups pass to 14 (i think) and he ran to score? how can you say he did horrible

anjang86
05-31-2004, 06:21 PM
you can't say the back up did horrible because really... he didn't see that much action, but I do think that Russell would have stopped that first goal.

Russell isn't that great either, he didn't play that good the game before either (Princeton).

Navy should have won today, everybody came to play but Russell. He's athletic and will be great in the future, but he is still a Sophmore, and this is his first season of action.

the thing about the backup was not just that he sucked bad (if you stil think he doesnt suck try and remember when he came out of the crease 1-2 yards to try and make a save when he should have stayed on the post.) an injury is demoralizing to a team when it is a key figure, whethere you want to admit it or not, because the subconscious plays a huge role in any sport. Thestizzle is right, Russel got his starting spot due in large part to his confidence and leadership abilities

i think russell did an outstadning job in both games. the thing with him is that he is the leader of the defense, he does things that dont show up in the stats such as vocal calls that stop shots from even happening. Also his work out of net stops other future shots. think of it this way. everytime he comes out of net and gets a ground ball that one less possesion for the other teams offense.

but I mean.. being a goalie, you gotta make some savees to be called a 'good goalie.' He's probably got more intangibles than a lot of other goalies, but in terms of saving shots (which is something you HAVE to do in the tournament) he isn't one of the best.

Pfeifer was a friggin wall the last couple quarters, absolutely amazing in my opinion, I sat right behind the cuse cage. Im a huge cuse fan too =P Russell did so good until he took that arm shot and had to sit out. No one in our rows noticed, just me and my friends bro we were like "****! Russell is lyin on the field!" then he got up and walked off. That sucked. Good game though, nailbiting to the end. :agree

Gotta remember that Finnigan wasn't warmed up and that he's a freshman. He set up some nice clears which led to one goal if I remember correctly. Nrvlc, I thought Russell was being sent to training at 4am tmrw?

yea he is, I really dont know how that whole thing works though. I dont know if he comes back to play next year or what.

BTW he isn't getting 'shipped' actually, he's just going somewhere to train to be a Navy Seal

Great game today all around despite the truly awful weather. What is it with memorial day weekend and downpours? I'll admit that even as a huge west point fan I was pulling for navy, the less of two evils one might say. I'm not crushed that 'Cuse won, but I'm definatly disapointed. I think having such a small precentage of teams win it year in and year out, definatly hurts the sport. Lets not kid our selves, 'Cuse is always in it. and I'm tired of it. I got nothing against 'cuse, I got in there after all and was seriously thinking of going there, but I definatly have something against Mikey Powell. Definatly booed him when his name was announced, and I wasn't alone. A very good end to a great weekend.

Maybe someone out there will know this, maybe not, but why unlike d2 and d3 was the trophy just handed to syracuse, versus a presentation. There was definatly one last year from what I remember. Not really that important I guess, but it would've been nice for navy.

Jester27
05-31-2004, 10:42 PM
I think one of the players for Cuse ran over to the trophy area and picked it up. No need for a presentation when they already had it.

u guys only hate mikey powell b/c u know u will never be that good. he is an unbelievable player who, along with his brothers, has done so much for the sport. give him the credit he deserves, 5 assists and the winning goal...doesnt get much better than that, "hollywood should buy that"

oh and some ppl r saying that navy should have won b/c it was memorial day and they deserved it, but look how hard cuse worked to win, coming from the 4th seed to beat the #1 and #2 teams in a stadium full of opposing fans...thats awesome

maybe navy should learn to lose with a little class...CONGRATS SU!

CCLaX24
06-01-2004, 12:16 PM
u shouldnt diss the navy team..they did loose in class

the navy fans felt that their team should have won...

navy should learn to lose with a little class...CONGRATS SU!

they played a great game... u shouldnt diss that team
navy came from far also they didnt even make the playoffs last year....u talk about turning it all around

hats off to both teams but i mean nothing agaisnt you laxgirl09 but navy played with their hearts out there... u have to admit that one small side of u was rooting for them...

no i can honestly say that i didnt want navy to win at all...congrats to them for getting there but mike powell, i think one of if not the best player out there, winning a national championship his senior yr, scoring the winning goal, 5 assists, most outstanding player, deserved this fairytale ending to his amazing career and as a sort of thanks for all that he has done to spread the game...hopefully now he will decide to play in the pros

the sport needs more players with the desire and dedication that this kid has

Russel came up huge against princeton with the stop with 9 seconds left that would have tied the game. If it wasnt for his outstanding play before that game they wouldnt have made it there in my mind. It seemed like he just didnt have it on monday, whether he wasnt seeing the ball or what. Like BTKID said he does lead the defense and does things that dont show up on the highlights or the stat sheets. All goalies have off days even the best do.
pfeifer was a beast out there, IMO he was a very large reason that syracuse won. He had some HUGE saves that could have turned the tide and changed the game completely.

I found this qoute out there i think it was on goalienation "the goalie posotion is the hardest to play, you are either the hero or the goat"

Now maybe I didnt see it but I dont see all the hype about that shot it was just a regular shot right to his stick I thought..anyway too bad he couldnt do that in the cuse game. BTW Princton all the way next year baby!

like 3/4 of the stadium were navy fans! me and my friend were sitting in a sea of navy students! she was for navy, and had a navy jersey on,a nd i had all orange from head to toe. but what i thought was cool was that the parents for navy were distrubuting the players practice shorts, and jerseys and pennys to the fans! so our whole side turned into navy fans, and the ones that were undecided sported the navy jerseys. a good idea from the parents actaully, but one of the parents handed me her sons gear, and was like you really need to change. and i w aslike uhh... haha... you're joking right? but she gave me the clothes anyways, so #28 on navy! i have all your practice gear!! i thought the backup goalie for navy was just as good as the starter. i watched them both during warmups, and they're both really young, and both need to build up more experiance. they did really well for what they were coming up against.
I really like how mike had so many assists during the game, he always spoke about how he honored assists above goals, and at mondays game he proved that he didn't need to score in order for syracuse to win. sure navys dissapointed about the loss, but i think syraucse and the people in NY would be just as dissapointed beucase it is powells senior year, and it's nice to finish off his collegiate career with an NCAA championship win!
