Listen to rap from the 80's and early 90's. Around mid 90's rap turned into gangsta rap. Check out Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy who rapped about political issues, Eric B. and Rakim. I always liked Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill".

Does Gil Scott-Heron (http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/profiles/scottherongil.shtml) count as rap? The author of the Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Scott-Heron) says "Scott-Heron is often seen as a founding father of rap," so I guess so. I don't follow the stuff. I do like old school rap from 1979 or 1980.

This may not be meaningful to you, but it's a song to people around here that really goes down deep. It's about a friend that died in march who was one of the best people i've met in my life. Just a background for the song is: His initials are MC and his number for sports were 9, so that's what he's talking about in the song. The singer may not be the best, but the words make it great.

I thought that old Sugar Hill label (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_Hill_Records_%28rap%29) stuff was great. Examples: Grandmaster Flash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandmaster_Flash), and Rapper's Delight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapper%27s_Delight). Once you get past old school, I'm out of the picture.

Amazingly, there's no Wikipedia entry for "The Disposable Heroes of Hiphopracy." Here's a link to one of their tunes:

Television: The Drug of a Nation (http://www.ekostv.com/node/118?PHPSESSID=a15958210845f5a2fc5e3ec4a757a9d6#com ment-56)

Grandmaster Flash was a DJ not a rapper. Youre thinking of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and songs like "White Lines," "New York, New York," and "The Message." Most of which was written, rapped by Melle Mel.

However, like most good rap, its pretty hypocritical. "White Lines" is a big anti cocaine rant, when pretty much everyone around the old school hip hop scene in New York was blown out of their minds on coke.

Licensed to Ill is all about drugs sex and crime. Not a drop of meaning in it.

Ive sort of given up on caring about meaning in rap, it kind of does the genre a diservice. Its a music founded on partying and sounding good. I dont want to be the elitist prick that ignores a quality record because theres a car on the front. Jay-Z's reasonable doubt is mainly about hustling and money and living the high life, its still one of the best records out there, imho. Its slick, personal, and accessable, he's on point the whole way through. That means more to me than hearing about how much Immortal Technique hates Bush.

I mean seriously, why is ImmTech so meaningful? Hes just some angry racist dude. Start a thread about trickle down economics, the tax code, or welfare. Copy and paste all the liberal posts, and you practically have a ImmTech song. Hes Chuck D twenty years late. Dead Prez, Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine, and KRS-One all did it better. I just dont like him. I dont know where he got the balls to drop "cracker" too.

DING DING DING. I mean Jay-Z is widely considered one of the Greatest of All Time, but Backpackers won't give him any respect because he's not "indie".

For people who need "meaningful" lyrics, they usually aren't so critical of rock music.

But I will stress:
CYNE

Nujabes is not an MC. He's a japanese producer. He produced the two soundtracks for Samurai Champloo and his two "solo" works, Metaphorical Music and one other I can't remember, are excellent. Honestly, I rank him as one of my favorite producers of all time, up there with the RZA and J Dilla.

There are a ton of amazing albums out there, but if I had to recommend a few albums for someone looking into it, I'd suggest:

Black Star : Mos Def & Talib Kweli
Midnight Marauders : A Tribe Called Quest
Low End Theory : A Tribe Called Quest
Resurrection : Common Sense (Common)
Grandmasters : GZA Vs. DJ Muggs
Lifestylez of Da Poor and Dangerous : Big L
