I am new to this whole process. There are alot of people out there now saying they are committed! Can someone tell me what does the term committed actually mean??

Verbal Commitment- You give the coach your word that you will go to and play for their university. Usually people verbally commit when they know they want to attend a school, but it is too early to sign an NLI or apply for Early Decision. If you verbally commit though, you do not sign your life away. It is your word, you can always go back on it and end up going somewhere else. It has happened before, and will happen again. I would personally advise against it, coaches generally know who is "committed" (given their word) and usually stop recruiting that prospect. You can however change your mind. Should you do that though, know that people will probably look down on you and will probably have some kind of bad feelings toward you.
Then there is the National Letter of Intent, aka NLI. When you sign your NLI, you pretty much agree to go to that school for one year. You don't get out of this type of thing unless it is a pretty special situation, even then, sometimes there are consequences like losing a year of eligibility. NLI is pretty complicated though, and I don't feel like I have sufficient knowledge to go into it deeper, but check out the NLI site and read up on it- http://www.national-letter.org/.
Pretty much committing means you agree that you will attend a certain school and play for them. That's not always the case, but generally that's how it works.
